About the Wine
Château Margaux is one of the most legendary wine estates in Bordeaux, with a history that stretches back over four centuries. It was one of only four châteaux to earn First Growth status in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, a distinction that cemented its place among the world’s finest wines. Known for its refined elegance, complexity, and extraordinary aging potential, Château Margaux stands as a benchmark for the entire Margaux appellation.
The estate’s reputation soared in the late 20th century under the leadership of André Mentzelopoulos, who acquired Château Margaux in 1977. His investments in vineyard management, winemaking facilities, and meticulous grape selection helped elevate the quality to new heights. His daughter, Corinne Mentzelopoulos, has continued his legacy, ensuring that Château Margaux remains at the pinnacle of Bordeaux winemaking.
Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, first introduced in 1908, is the estate’s highly sought-after second wine. Over the years, it has evolved into a wine that truly reflects the château’s signature elegance and finesse. Sourced from younger vines and carefully selected plots that don’t quite make it into the Grand Vin, Pavillon Rouge offers a more accessible yet deeply expressive take on the Château Margaux style.
The Margaux appellation, located in the Haut-Médoc, is famous for its gravel-rich soils, which provide excellent drainage and allow vines to develop deep roots. This unique terroir contributes to the silky tannins and floral aromatics that define the wines of Margaux. While neighboring regions like Pauillac and Saint-Julien produce bolder, more structured wines, Margaux wines are known for their grace, perfume, and balance—qualities that shine through in Pavillon Rouge.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95-98 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."
Tasting Notes
64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. This rich, full-bodied red is packed with blackberry, plum, tobacco, and cedar flavors. It’s delicious now but has the potential to become even more complex with a little time in the cellar.
Critical Reviews
A plush and opulent Pavillon Rouge with plums, boysenberries and hints of cedar and chocolate. Full-bodied, this has lovely powdery tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Juicy and delicious, it's so attractive now that it’s hard not to drink. Second wine of Chateau Margaux. 64% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot, 7% petit verdot and 5% cabernet franc. ~96, James Suckling
Bottled in July, the inky-hued 2022 Château Margaux Pavillon Rouge offers a classic nose of ripe black raspberries, cassis, spring flowers, spice oak, and graphite. This leads to a medium to full-bodied Margaux with remarkable purity, a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, plenty of tannins, and a great finish. ~95, Jeb Dunnuck
Beautiful vivid color, bright and intense. Dark chocolate, cherries and subtle perfume on the nose. Bright and lively thought also lean and straight on the palate. A generous weight and intense grip to the tannins. It’s on the tense side, focused with extreme precision to the fruit profile with racy acidity unpinning the tannins which are at the fore. Feels refined and elegant, more serious than some other second wines in its construction but is classy, juicy, sculpted and softly plush. The fruit has bite and tang, with licorice and graphite edges and spiced accents giving angles but all enjoyable and really building to the whole. Great freshness and length. ~94, Decanter
The 2022 Pavillon Rouge has turned out very nicely, offering up expressive aromas of raspberries and mulberries mingled with hints of licorice, anise and spices. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's concentrated and structured, with a rich core of fruit underpinned by plenty of sweet, powdery tannin. This is a serious Pavillon Rouge that will reward some patience. ~93, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
