Most wine collectors and sommeliers consider Chablis to be one of the most sought-after appellations in Burgundy, renowned for producing pure, mineral-driven, and unoaked Chardonnay with exceptional acidity. The region’s unique Kimmeridgian soil, formed over 180 million years from fossilized oyster shells, gives Chablis its distinctive minerality and crisp structure, setting it apart from Chardonnay produced elsewhere in the world.

The 2022 Domaine Daniel Dampt et Fils Fourchaume Chablis Premier Cru is a remarkable expression of this terroir. Domaine Daniel Dampt, a family-run estate with over 150 years of winemaking heritage, is known for crafting elegant and precise Chablis wines that showcase their vineyard origins. Fourchaume is one of Chablis’ most prestigious Premier Cru sites, located on southwest-facing slopes along the right bank of the Serein River. Its limestone-rich soils and optimal exposure create wines that are both structured and beautifully balanced, reflecting the hallmark minerality and finesse of Premier Cru Chablis.

This is a vibrant, precise, and expressive Chablis, offering both immediate pleasure and aging potential for up to 5-7 years.

Fourchaume, known as one of the most celebrated Chablis Premier crus, comes from vineyards nestled on gently sloping hills that greet the morning sun. This favorable orientation allows the soil to warm up swiftly, facilitating the maturation process.

Aging: Aged on fine lees in stainless steel tanks to enhance texture and complexity

A blend of 100% Chardonnay, this Premier Cru Chablis displays a brilliant pale gold color. The nose is elegant and expressive, with aromas of citrus fruits, white flowers, and a hint of flinty minerality. On the palate, it is vibrant and precise, featuring flavors of lemon zest, green apple, and wet stone, balanced by racy acidity and a long, mineral-driven finish that highlights the unique terroir of Fourchaume.

This has all the drive and focus you could wish for. A fine melange of ripe fruit, bright acidity, mineral notes and cleansing bitterness on the finish. Daniel Dampt continues to make wonderful Chablis in Milly. Perhaps just a little more traditional in style than the bottlings of sons Vincent and Sébastien. ~92 Decanter
