The 2022 Château Tronquoy marks a remarkable achievement for this estate in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Formerly known as Tronquoy-Lalande, the estate has rebranded as Château Tronquoy, signaling a new chapter in its winemaking journey. With a historic terroir, the estate produces wines that reflect the distinctiveness of Saint-Estèphe soils, blending gravel, clay, and limestone to impart structure, depth, and complexity.
The wine is primarily made from 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by 35% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. Due to low yields of Merlot in 2022, the blend features a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, contributing to its remarkable structure and depth.
The 2022 vintage stands out for its exceptional ripeness and concentration, showcasing the warmth of the year while maintaining a pure, balanced, and seamless character. Jeb Dunnuck called it “the finest vintage of this cuvée ever produced,” noting the wine’s aromas of cassis, graphite, and violets, as well as its rich textures and sweet tannins. The wine's balance and structure make it an exciting offering for collectors.
In addition to its rich fruit flavors and balanced profile, the 2022 Château Tronquoy shows a distinct mineral tang and salinity, adding an intriguing estuarine quality. Critics have praised the wine’s evolution, noting its marked improvement over previous years. James Suckling called it “the greatest Tronquoy ever,” and Vinous Media highlighted its intensity and balance, with great aging potential.
Aging: 18-24 months in French oak barrels
Tasting Notes
59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot. Expect a full-bodied, powerful expression of Saint-Estèphe: rich, concentrated, and balanced. The wine offers intense flavors of cassis, graphite, and violets, with layers of dark berries and chocolate. A distinct mineral tang and subtle salinity add complexity, while sweet tannins and a long finish ensure a harmonious, age-worthy wine.
Critical Reviews
The 2022 Château Tronquoy is the finest vintage of this cuvée ever produced, offering fabulous aromatics of cassis, graphite, violets, flowers, chocolate, and earthy nuances. Full-bodied and beautifully rich and textured on the palate, with sweet tannins and a seamless, concentrated mouthfeel, it’s already hard to resist, and as I said from barrel, it shows the ripeness of the vintage while staying pure, balanced, and seamless. It’s going to benefit from just 4-6 years in the cellar and drink well for 25+ years. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck
Lots of blackberries, lead pencil, dark earth and blackcurrants. Bright and clear. Full-bodied with lots of fruit yet framed and structured with a deep and intense finish. It goes on for a long time. Greatest Tronquoy ever. A blend of 59% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot and 6% petit verdot. Needs five to six years to open. ~95 James Suckling
The 2022 Tronquoy contains more Cabernet Sauvignon this year due to the low-yielding Merlot, resulting in an impressive Saint-Estèphe. It was an impressive Saint-Estèphe out of barrel. Now, it has a very intense bouquet of blackberry, raspberry coulis, wilted violets and a slight honeyed aroma. This is well defined, miles away from the Tronquoy I tasted a decade ago. The palate is medium-bodied and very balanced, with powdery tannins and a thread of salinity that gives it an estuarine personality. There's real character to this wine, though I suggest giving it three to five years in bottle before broaching. Excellent. ~94 Vinous Media
The 2022 Tronquoy has turned out much better than I anticipated, bursting with aromas of dark berries, cassis, cigar box and nicely integrated new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and elegantly muscular palate that's dense and penetrating. This is well worth seeking out. ~94 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
A richly scented nose full of fragrant blackcurrants. Smooth and straight, this has a gorgeous bounce and sense of energy from the get go. Taut and lively with dried herbs and exotic spices edging the pure black bramble fruit. Ends with a dose of sticky liquorice, aniseed, clove and mint with a mineral tang too. Bright and really well presented with high, mouthwatering acidity. A little on the toasted side for now so give this a few years but once it's fully integrated this will be a joy to drink. ~93 Decanter
Gently steeped black cherry and currant fruit shows a subtle juicy edge, while tobacco, licorice root and chestnut leaf accents fill in liberally. Offers a late cast iron echo on the toasty finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Best from 2026 through 2037. ~92 Wine Spectator
