About the Wine
Nestled in the heart of Bordeaux’s iconic Margaux appellation, Château Siran is a wine steeped in both history and innovation. With its origins dating back to 1428, this estate has become synonymous with elegance and refinement, making it one of the most beloved estates in the region. For over 160 years, the Miailhe family has expertly crafted wines that express the unique qualities of the terroir: gravel soils perfect for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon and a cool maritime climate that imparts freshness and finesse to the wine.
The 2022 vintage of Château Siran is a true reflection of this legacy, yet it carries with it a sense of innovation and modern winemaking. The estate achieved a remarkable 14% alcohol in 2022, thanks to an ideal growing season. This wine is the result of meticulous attention to detail, with each plot being carefully selected to create the perfect blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The extended maceration period allowed the winemakers to extract maximum flavor and color from the grapes, delivering a wine that is as powerful as it is refined.
For the first time in many years, the estate did not produce Petit Siran, focusing entirely on creating the very best Grand Vin, making this a particularly exciting release for collectors and wine enthusiasts alike.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95-98 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."
Aging: 12-14 months in French oak barrels
Tasting Notes
53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc. Expect a refined yet complex expression of Margaux: elegant, structured, and fruit-forward. The wine presents blackberry, cassis, and dark cherry notes, complemented by hints of licorice, pencil shavings, and a touch of spice. The palate is medium-bodied, offering a smooth, velvety texture with well-integrated tannins. A subtle mineral edge and juicy acidity lift the finish, making the wine feel both rich and refreshing. This is a wine with layers of complexity and a wonderfully elegant finish.
Critical Reviews
The lead-pencil and dark-berry aromas are very persuasive here, and aromatic! Medium to full body with juicy fruit, velvety tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Creamy and pretty. Give it two or three years. Best after 2028. ~94 James Suckling
Concentrated, juicy and lifted - this really combines ripe summer berry fruit with a menthol lift and fine, grippy tannins to give a wide mouthfeel with persistence. It's not at all plush, definitely more streamlined at this point with focus and drive. Feels well worked, finessed but still with lots of flavour and polish, ending slightly salty with a liquorice tang. Detailed and easy to like. ~94 Decanter
The 2022 Siran is every bit as impressive in bottle as it was en primeur. Ample, rich and imposing, the 2022 has a lot to offer. A blast of dark-toned fruit, new leather, licorice and chocolate makes quite a statement. Siran is quite the extrovert. While it is not the most complex Margaux out there, its immediacy and charm are both notable. ~94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
I loved the nose on the 2022 Château Siran, a complex, medium to full-bodied Margaux with plenty of black cherry and plum fruit, some chocolate, violets, and floral nuances, ripe, polished tannins, and a nicely layered, balanced style on the palate. Based on 53% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Petit Verdot, raised in 35% new barrels, give bottles a few years and enjoy over the following two decades or so. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck
The 2022 Siran, bottled in May 2024, offers brambly red fruit with touches of sous-bois, pressed flowers and cedar. It opens nicely in the glass with suggestions of dark chocolate in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and accents of black pepper and clove. This wine surprisingly comes across a little Saint-Julien in style, and is somewhat austere for the first ten minutes. Then the fruit returns, as if playing peek-a-boo. Give this two or three years in bottle. ~93 Neal Martin, Vinous Media
Aromas of minty cassis, herbs and pencil shavings introduce the 2022 Siran, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and lively wine that's seamless and integrated. This is an especially strong effort for this estate. ~92 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
