The 2022 Château Mouton Rothschild represents the zenith of Bordeaux winemaking, crafted in the prestigious Pauillac appellation. Mouton Rothschild’s vineyards are situated on the gravelly banks of the Gironde River, where the combination of deep, well-drained soils and a temperate climate provides ideal conditions for producing wines of exceptional depth and complexity. The estate’s terroir has earned it a reputation as one of the most prestigious in Bordeaux, with the unique blend of sun, soil, and maritime influence yielding wines with great structure and aging potential.
The Rothschild family, stewards of Château Mouton since the mid-19th century, have been central to the estate’s ascent to the top of the Bordeaux hierarchy. Originally owned by Baron Nathaniel Rothschild, Mouton was officially promoted to First Growth status in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, a distinction that solidified its place among the world’s finest wines. The estate has since passed down through the generations, with Baroness Philippine de Rothschild leading the estate to even greater heights until her passing in 2014. Today, the estate is under the management of her children, Baroness Philippine's children, who continue to uphold the legacy of excellence, preserving the family’s commitment to tradition while embracing innovation.
The 2022 vintage was shaped by a unique set of climatic conditions that contributed to its exceptional quality. The growing season began with a warm, dry spring, followed by a hot and dry summer, which allowed the grapes to ripen evenly and early. This early ripening ensured optimal fruit maturity, with the harvest taking place between September 1 and September 26. The cool nights and sunny days during this period helped preserve the grapes' acidity while enhancing their aromatic profile.
Aging: Aged in 100% new French oak for 15 months.
Tasting Notes
92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot. The 2022 Mouton Rothschild offers a captivating bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry, and cassis, intertwined with aromas of chocolate, tobacco, and Asian spices. Hints of smokiness and tobacco leaf add complexity, while a touch of cedar and earthy notes deepen the experience. The palate is dense and opulent, with velvety tannins and rich, dark fruit flavors.
Critical Reviews
Wow. The aromas here are so complete with blackcurrants, asphalt, violets, lead pencil, orange blossoms and black truffles. A perfect nose. It's full-bodied yet tied down with seamless tannins that run the length of the wine and give such a seductive mouthfeel and persistence. A vintage with one of the highest percentages of cabernet sauvignon ever. Quintessential, great Bordeaux with no limits. Drink after 2028. ~100 James Suckling
Bottled in June of 2024, the 2022 Château Mouton Rothschild checks in as classic blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot that was raised all in new barrels. Incredibly concentrated yet light on its feet and graceful, this inky-hued beauty has sensational notes of cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and chocolate that are to die for. It shows the ripe, opulent style of the vintage yet brings sensational purity, loads of tannins, and a gorgeous finish. For the tech geeks out there, this hit 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.86, and an IPT (tannins) of 76. It has the depth of fruit and texture to offer incredible pleasure even today, yet it deserves a decade of bottle age and will evolve for 50-60 years. It reminds me of a mix of the 2009 and 2010. ~100 Jeb Dunnuck
The 2022 Mouton Rothschild is a powerhouse. Inky, deep and explosive, the 2022 is a real head-turner. The combination of intense dark fruit, strong gravelly/mineral notes and imposing structure clearly bring to mind another great Mouton, and that is the 1986. In a word: magnificent. The blend is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot. ~96-98 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
The 2022 Mouton Rothschild was picked 1 to 26 September with one of the highest Cabernet Sauvignon contents in years, matured in 100% new oak as usual. Very deep, almost opaque in color. It is stubborn on the nose, at first, backward, then opens after 10 minutes with black plum, cassis and violet aromas. It is more voluptuous than the 2022 Lafite-Rothschild which is what you expect. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy and quite strict tannins (the IPT is 76), that frame layers of black fruit laced with tobacco and graphite. Powerful, almost burly, it is perhaps how the 1986 tasted in its youth. A Mouton-Rothschild determined to make a statement and it certainly does that. Feels a bit like tasting Thor's hammer at the moment, but it will just require considerable cellaring. 14.05% alcohol. ~96-98 NM-VM
The 2022 Mouton Rothschild is one of the most muscular, almost brutally powerful wines of the vintage. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums and sweet crème de cassis mingled with notions of espresso roast, pencil lead and petroleum jelly, it's full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with huge reserves of tannin and fruit. A blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot that represents 49% of the estate's production, this is a prodigious Mouton that's built for the cellar. ~97 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
