About the Wine
Château Langoa Barton, a Third Growth estate in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, has been owned by the Barton family since 1821, making it one of Bordeaux’s longest-standing family-run estates. Often considered the "little sister" of Léoville Barton, Langoa Barton shares a commitment to structured, classically styled Saint-Julien wines but with a slightly more approachable profile in its youth.
The 2022 vintage marks a historic milestone, as it is the first to be vinified in the estate's new gravity-fed winery, a major investment that has allowed for greater precision in winemaking. The upgraded facility has doubled the number of vats, permitting sub-plot by sub-plot vinification, resulting in a wine that is more refined and expressive than ever before.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95-98 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."
Aging: aged in 60% new French oak barrels for added depth and structure.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Château Langoa Barton is deep garnet-purple in color, revealing an expressive bouquet of cassis, blackberries, violets, and cigar wrapper, with undertones of cedar, tobacco, and graphite. The palate is medium to full-bodied, offering fresh red and black fruits, finely-knit tannins, and a vibrant acidity that carries through to a long, structured finish with hints of pepper, clove, and dark chocolate.
The new winemaking techniques have given this vintage more precision and finesse, without losing its signature Saint-Julien grip and aging potential.
Critical Reviews
Supple and lively, this has energy and intensity from the start. Clean and precise, well worked, cool and fresh with tannins that do well to give the frame and structure without overwhelming the fruit. Really nice this year, good movement and liveliness, rich fruit but juicy and fun. Doesn't take itself too seriously and I really like it!! Harvest September 8-23. Yield of 30hl/ha. Aged in 60% new French oak. ~95 Decanter
The first vintage produced in the estate's new winery, which more than doubled the number of vats, permitting sub-plot by sub-plot vinification. The brilliant 2022 Langoa Barton offers up aromas of dark berries, cassis, violets, and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy palate endowed with terrific depth and tension. Polished and penetrating, it should match or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages. One of the smartest buys of the en primeur campaign. ~93-95+ Wine Advocate
The Grand Vin 2022 Château Langoa Barton checks in as 56.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 2.5% Cabernet Franc, raised in 60% new barrels. Medium-bodied and vibrant, with a fresher, elegant, yet still textured profile, it has pure black and blue fruits, some lead pencil, tobacco, and earthy nuances, fine tannins, and a great finish. This 2022 is all about finesse and elegance. ~93-95 Jeb Dunnuck
Intense, ripe fruit aromas, like cooking blackberry jam, with subtle roasted notes, cassis, and a mineral undertone. The palate is straightforward, fresh, with crisp fruit and outstanding tannin quality. As always, Langoa Barton shows plenty of charm and impressive length, making the wait for its big brother (Léoville Barton) much more enjoyable. ~94-96 Adrian van Velsen, vvWine.ch
Cassis, tobacco, flowers, blackberries, and red currants show easily on the nose and palate. There is a wealth of fresh, dark red fruits, creamy tannins, and blackberries on the mid-palate and in the finish. This clearly shows a new face for Langoa Barton, with more fruit and softer tannins, yet the wine holds on to its classic Saint-Julien style. Drink from 2027-2050. ~93-95 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
Possesses plenty of flesh and juicy richness, well-supported by first-class tannins, with ideal length. A full-blooded Langoa with guaranteed pleasure. ~94 Vinum Wine Magazine
Another highly enjoyable Saint-Julien from this vintage. Smooth tannins, mouthwatering acidity. Relaxed and approachable but still with great density of fruit. Sapid and savory, simply delicious! ~93-94 Wine Maniacs
Beautiful, intense nose, precise, and offering depth and a fine infusion of fruit. Notes of juicy Boysenberry, violets, and bright cherries, with hints of licorice, nutmeg, toasted hazelnuts, and vanilla. The palate is fresh, mineral-driven, and well-balanced, delivering silky, airy texture, great energy, and elegance. A beautifully textured and expressive wine. ~93-94 VertdeVin
Dark ruby color, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Fine blackberry fruit, some licorice, ripe black cherries, inviting bouquet. Taut, energetic, with ripe cherries, good freshness, herbal savoriness, and a salty, lemony touch on the finish. A lively food wine. ~94 Falstaff
Ripe and juicy, this wine also has a fine structure. Rich black fruits set the scene for the wine's future, with tannins and acidity marching together.~93-95 Wine Enthusiast
