About the Wine
Let’s be honest—finding a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru at this price is like finding a hidden gem buried deep in the heart of Bordeaux. A wine from this prestigious region, made by a tiny estate, could easily cost twice as much. But here’s where it gets exciting: Château Abelyce isn’t your run-of-the-mill Bordeaux. With only five acres of vines, this estate is so small it’s almost impossible to get your hands on a bottle, let alone at this price.
The magic behind this wine comes from Amélie Aubert, a true visionary in the Bordeaux wine world. She didn’t just inherit a vineyard—she carved out her own little corner of Saint-Émilion, taking vines from her family’s land and making something extraordinary with them. The vineyard sits on a unique patch of terroir—gravel, sand, and clay—that is perfect for Merlot. And that’s exactly what Amélie focuses on: crafting a single-grape wine that stands out in a sea of Bordeaux blends. She’s all about expressing the purity of her Merlot, letting the land speak for itself.
With the estate being so small, production is minuscule. This is a wine that’s barely available outside of Europe, let alone in the U.S. So, when we say this wine is a rare find, we mean it. You won’t see it on every shelf, and you definitely won’t find it for this price anywhere else.
2020 was an exceptional vintage that was awarded 98 points by Vinous Media, who said, “An exceptional vintage for Bordeaux, certainly the best in the 2018-2020 trilogy. Quality is exceptionally high among the great wines of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol.”
Tasting Notes
100% Merlot. A wine that offers richness with an undercurrent of refinement. The oak, chocolate, and vanilla notes weave perfectly with the blackberry and blackcurrant fruits, creating a wine that’s both bold and sophisticated. A wine that speaks to you without shouting.
Critical Reviews
A beautiful wine, spicy, structured and with a polished texture, this has swathes of juicy black Merlot fruits. It has a fine future and will be good to drink from 2026. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
