About The Wine

The classically styled 2019 DAOU Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon showcases Paso Robles as a world-class region for Bordeaux-style wines. In the end, the 2019 vintage is nothing short of an immensely approachable wine that will age with grace and refinement.

The year 2019 produced possibly the greatest vintage DAOU Mountain has ever experienced. Heavy rains during dormancy, combined with moderate temperatures and extended hang time, yielded the latest harvest we have seen to date. The ample winter rainfall—close to 40 inches total— gave way to a healthy cover crop that replenished the soil’s micronutrient levels. The climate throughout the growing season was perfect, with temperatures mostly in the 80s and 90s, and not a single day reaching 100 degrees during the entire year. The harvested grapes arrived in exquisite condition— showing no damage, sunburn, or shriveling. The resulting wines are marked by elegance and power, with moderate alcohols and great acidity that promise excellent longevity.

Hailing from Lebanon by way of Paris, France, Georges, and Daniel Daou moved to the United States as young men and soon achieved business success. But that was just the beginning. From their family history and worldview was now imagined a fearless goal—to produce the world’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon, and to curate a lifestyle to match. From terroir to winemaking to architecture, they leave no detail unexplored, so that this wine, and this place, may never fail to astonish.

Family-owned and operated, DAOU Family Estates is committed to producing collectible, world-class wines to rival the most respected appellations in the world. DAOU Mountain’s combination of remarkable geology, microclimate, a 2,200-foot elevation, and steep slopes gives it a terroir described as “a jewel of ecological elements.” As stewards of this beautiful terroir, DAOU’s goal is to make unique fine wines that honestly and accurately reflect the potential of the Estate and to craft Bordeaux-style wines that combine Old World tradition with New World techniques.

Aging: 17 months in 50% new French oak

Tasting Notes: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. It opens with a highly perfumed nose of black cherry, mulberry, plum, and Oregon blackberry, all underlain by notes of cassis, kirsch, licorice, and crushed gravel. Secondary aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, and dried sage reveal an elegant complexity. On the palate, it is powerful, balanced, and brimming with layers of fruit and spice. Tempting flavors of Zante currant, boysenberry, and black plum anticipate accents of cigar box, mocha, crushed herbs, and pencil shavings. Firm, fine-grained tannins provide ample structure to support a lengthy finish of sweet cherry, leather, toasty oak, and vanilla crème brûlée.

Reviews

The barrel sample of 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve contains 15% Petit Verdot and is expected to age 18 months in 50% new French oak. It has a deep ruby-purple color and pretty, fresh scents of dried herbs, graphite, violets, crushed blackcurrants, and blue fruit notions. The palate is gorgeous, with lifted, fresh fruit character and a structure that feels packed with pixelated tannins, and it finishes long and floral. ~92-94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a soft, supple, incredibly sexy Cabernet that brings ample cassis and blueberry fruits as well as some vanilla oak, white flowers, spice-like aromas, and flavors. It will compete with any number of impressive Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons and is full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a great finish. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck
