With more than 1300 years of history, Villa Bibbiani is a little gem in the heart of Tuscany. Gambero Rosso said that Bibbiani is “much more than a winery, much more than an estate.”We agree.

The story behind Villa Bibbiani is just fascinating. To track its origins, we have to go back to Middle Ages, when the Villa belonged to the Benedictine monastery. However, “modern” times at Bibbiani started in 1700, when the property was acquired by the Frescobaldi family. For those who don’t know, Frescobaldi is Italian royalty. This family was responsible for the first vineyards and the botanical garden (still to this day) planted by Cosimo Ridolfi, the father of modern Italian agriculture.

Today, it’s owned by a doctor from Houston who sold his San Antonio healthcare group to United Healthcare. He has spared no expense to upgrade the winery in the last decade, bring in a talented young winemaker, and the wines are once again receiving the critical praise they have had for centuries.

Bibbiani is located in a magical place, so surreal that it has even been embodied in Leonardo Da Vinci’s art. Located in the hills of Montalbano between Capraia and Limite, this colossal property comprises a total of 1,000 acres, this includes the famous Villa (a 5-star accommodation), the botanical garden, the olives, the vineyards, and the ancient cellar.

The beautiful vineyards extend from the slopes of Montalbano hill to the church of San Jacopo in Pulignano. They are planted with Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other native grapes, with vines between 20 and 50 years old.

Leopoldo Morara is Villa Bibbiani’s winemaker. He has forged his expertise at very recognized estates in countries like France, Chile, and New Zealand. This passionate winemaker has been leading Bibbiani’s team since 2018. He says that “the key to making a good wine is maximum respect for the terroir, and we work solely along these lines.”

Bibbiani is the perfect combination of tradition with modernity. The state-of-the-art vinification area, and the ancient cellar, combined with Tuscan winemaking tradition, deliver Bibbiani’s exceptional, unexpected, and unique wines.  Acquired by an American owner in 2016, the property has undergone extensive upgrades.

Montereggi is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon crafted with 50-year-old vines. The terroir where these vines are planted is simply beautiful, with soils rich in sandstone, skeleton, and galestro. This results in an outstanding Cab with great structure, depth, and intensity.

Aging: 8 months in French oak barrels followed by six months in large 25-hectolitre barrels.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Solid and deep. This powerful wine has a very intense ruby-red color. A complex nose of Italian herbs combined with hints of espresso and mocha. In the mouth, it is pervasive and gives long-lasting flavors (this wine will surely age well into 2036) with raspberry and red currants. With a great personality and a high potential for aging, it is a genuine expression of a Cabernet Sauvignon. There’s a YUM factor here. I love it. Critics should have rated this 95 points!

Dark ruby red. In the nose, initially bacony, smoky tones, then cassis and mint, sealing wax and noble spice in the aftertaste. Dense and compact on the palate, showing dark fruit, with a nice, emphatic juiciness in the finish. ~91 Falstaff

Rich, creamy nose with some hazelnuts to the dense blackcurrants, ink and chocolate. Full-bodied palate with juicy fruit and dense but creamy tannins. Long and concentrated. Drink or hold. ~91 James Suckling

The 2019 Montereggi opens slowly in the glass, at first darkly floral and inward. Swirling unlocks a bouquet of black currants complemented by sage and sweet smoke nuances. This is softly textured yet racy on the palate, with juicy red fruits that give way to graphite mineral tones. It finishes structured and long, leaving fine-grained tannins to lurk beneath a coating of raspberry and licorice. ~90 Vinous Media
