About the Wine

James Suckling described Montepulciano as “solid, rich, easy-to-like, and best of all wallet-friendly wines.” We love this wine and so do our clients. In fact, we can't keep it in stock. People who love bright blueberry and blackberry fruit, a hefty dose of oak and vanilla, and a mocha finish will love this wine.

Sangro winery is located in Fossacesia, a city in the province of Chieti in the Abruzzo region of Italy. This winery was founded in 1971 by a cooperative made up of 100 members whose main mission was “to transform the precious grapes of local winemakers.”

Cantina Sangro’s name is given thanks to the Sangro River that rises in the middle of Abruzzo National Park near Pescasseroli in the Apennine Mountains. This river is one of the most important waterways on the Adriatic side of the Apennines. Sandro River’s wide valley is a very prosperous agricultural area.

Sangro winery is located left side of the valley, where deep and rich soils made up of silt and limestone pebbles, are the perfect terroir for the grapes to thrive, delivering wines with rich flavors and aromas.

Sangro’s grapes include native varieties such as Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Pecorino, Passerina, and Cococciola.

Cantina Sangro has recently incorporated Cantina Frentana’s winemaker, Gianni Pasquale. Gianni is a very respected Italian winemaker who’s leading some of the major cooperatives in Abruzzo.

2018 was a good year for the Abruzzo region. Vinous Media gave this vintage a 90-point review, and said that "The best 2018 whites and reds are a pleasure to taste, showcasing a cooler vintage character, and should continue to improve with time in bottle."

Aging: 9 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 100% Montepulciano. Very intense ruby red color. Complex and elegant aromas, with notes of violets, matured red fruits, vanilla, and spicy notes.
