The quest for excellence and love for nature has always been a passion of the Bulgari family and has brought about intense research and development of the different potentialities of the local terroirs, which have generously given back three different qualities of harmonious red wines. Giovanni Bulgari, chief executive of Podernuovo and the creative soul of this venture, is naturally drawn to all environmental issues and considers respecting nature an essential element while creating his wine. Finding a balance and harmony by reducing carbon dioxide while processing the grapes is the company’s objective.
"I wanted to create elegant wines respecting the diversity of their character: the common denominator among them is elegance, in harmony and in respect of their soil. The vines and their soil have specific needs, which must be interpreted and respected in order to obtain the best wines." ~Giovanni Bulgari
The new, modern wine cellar in Tuscany is in the Chianti DOC, but Bulgari opted to use the IGT designation (just as Antinori did with Tignanello). Bulgari also owns a property in Umbria near Lago di Corbara, where he is producing a Chardonnay and Grechetto white wine. However, since that wine is produced at the winery in Tuscany, it's labeled as a vino da tavola.
The main vines that are grown at Podernuovo a Palazzone are Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Montepulciano, and Merlot. Therra, is a blend of the grapes grown on the property, and the specific blend changes with each harvest. The name Therra evokes the true flavors of the Tuscan soil.
You can pay a lot more for IGT red blends from this part of the world, up to $150+. This wine is an exceptional deal that offers lovers of dark fruit and serious wine a great value.
Aging: 225 liter barriques for 10 months, in cement vats for 6 months
A blend of Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Therra has a ruby red color with dark purple and almost black hues. Hints of wild berries and blueberries with smoked and toasted final notes. The palate is exuberant with lively tannins and intense fruit, very persistent. For people who the taste of Tuscany, this wine is already showing some secondary wine flavors of tobacco leaf, dried leather, baked figs and Mediterranean herbs.
This is a red with very intense dark berries, such as raspberries and blackberries, as well as oranges and other citrus fruit. It’s medium-to full-bodied with bright acidity and firm, racy tannins. Linear and sophisticated. A blend of sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Try after 2023. ~92 James Suckling
