Emerson Brown is a collaboration between two talented and acclaimed winemakers, Keith Emerson and Brian Brown. It all began while working at Vineyard 29 during the 2005 harvest, a vintage marked by an excessively large crop, so big that many wineries turned fruit away at the crush pad. The team did a little horse-trading with growers spawning a new partnership, Emerson Brown. They have continually collaborated on Napa Valley Wines ever since.
Keith Emerson is the Director of Winemaking at Vineyard 29, a position he's held since 2005 and has worked in more than 18 different vintages. His business partner, Brian Brown, earned a viticulture and enology degree from UC Davis in 2001. Brown has worked harvests in Napa, Sonoma, Australia before becoming the full-time enologist at Trefethen Vineyards.
The Napa Valley Cabernet is an expression that gives these talented winemakers complete control over their product. Which AVA's the fruit is sourced from is highly dependant on the vintage. With connections they have built over their careers in the valley, Emerson and Brown have been able to cherry-pick the best fruit available year in and year out to make this exceptionally expressive wine.
Tasting Notes: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 5% Malbec. This wine has a deep reddish-purple and has aromas of kirsch, sassafras, currants, and tobacco leaf. The palate has a nice velvety viscosity and round powdery tannins. The mouthfeel is complemented by fresh acidity reminiscent of ripe raspberries. The finish is long and lingering with flavors of dried cherries, a fennel bulb, vanilla wafers, and a touch of mocha.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is absolutely gorgeous. Ripe, plummy, and inviting, the 2018 offers plenty of punch at a modest price. Red cherry, plum, cedar, tobacco, spice, and dried flowers are front and center. Best of all, the 2018 will drink well right out of the gate. It is immensely appealing, even in the early going. The 2018 Cabernets are some of the finest wines I have tasted from Emerson Brown. I see a bit more depth, creaminess, and character than in the past. The Napa Valley Cabernet is especially fine in 2018, and it's a great value too. ~92 Antonio Galloni
Composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 5% Malbec, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley was aged for 18 months in oak, 40% new. Deep garnet-purple in color, it springs from the glass with ripe black cherries, cassis, and boysenberries scents plus hints of dark chocolate, potpourri, and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with savory-laced black fruits, framed by grainy tannins and lovely freshness, finishing on a minty note. 860 cases were made. ~91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Checking in as 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and the rest Malbec, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is a nicely textured, fruit-forward 2018 that represent a good value, offering full-bodied aromas and flavors of earth red and black fruits, tobacco, and cedar. It’s well worth seeking out and will cruise for a decade in cold cellars. ~91 Jeb Dunnuck
