The Benegas family produced the malbecs that caused me to fall hard for Mendoza, some twenty years ago. This is a storied estate and quality is always very high. Only recently, these wines have returned to the United States, and I couldn't be more pleased. I cannot think of another Cabernet in the world where Michel Rolland and Paul Hobbs had a hand in the production, let alone for a wine under $30! This is real deal Cabernet from the Benegas estate vineyards. The wine is fresh, light and dances in the mouth. It's not over the top heavy. Rather, the oak is tame and interlaced elegantly. There is a purity to this wine that underscores why Mendoza Cabernet may be the best quality and value Cabernet in the universe. Highly recommended!
About the Winery
In the 19th century, Don Tiburcio Benegas was already a firm believer in the terroir of Mendoza long before grapes were a cash crop anywhere in the Americas. His early plantings of Bordeaux varieties make up the sprawling Benegas estate that’s now an icon across South America. Their Estate Cabernet Sauvignon vines are gently watered by Andes snowmelt that lets Cab ripen beautifully.
Reviews
Aromas of chocolate, walnuts, spices and berries follow through to a full body, chewy tannins and a savory finish. The hints of tobacco and tea are really interesting here. Drink now. 93JS
