Paul Hobbs, hailed by Forbes as the “Steve Jobs of the wine world,”is a name that changed the landscape of Napa Valley and beyond. A graduate with a Master’s degree in Viticulture and Winemaking from UC Davis, Hobbs first rose to prominence as Robert Mondavi’s right-hand man, playing a pivotal role as the first winemaker at the legendary Opus One winery. His journey didn’t stop there—Hobbs became vice-president of Simi Winery and eventually established a world-renowned wine empire with estates like Paul Hobbs Winery and Crossbarn in California, Viña Cobos in Argentina, Crocus in France, and Yacoubian-Hobbs in Armenia.

Today, he consults with over 30 wineries across the globe, bringing his unparalleled expertise to regions in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Canada, Spain, and beyond.

The 2021 Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon embodies Hobbs’ pursuit of vineyard-specific excellence, crafted from Napa’s southernmost vineyards where cool climates meet the valley’s sunlit warmth. This isn’t just a Napa Cabernet; it’s a wine with a unique sense of place, expressing Hobbs’ mastery of terroir and minimal intervention winemaking.

2021 is looking to be one of the vintages of the decade. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 95-98 point score, and said: "Two thousand twenty-one is a fabulous vintage in Napa Valley. That’s the good news. The not so good news is that production is down sharply, 30-50% in many cases. The wines have tremendous energy as well as finesse. In tasting, the 2021s show some of the savory intensity of other drought vintages – 2013 and 2014 come to mind – but with more aromatic explosiveness and greater inner sweetness."

Aging: 18 months in 53% New French oak barrels.

83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot. Deep garnet hue that foreshadows the wine’s bold, layered character. The aroma profile is rich and inviting, brimming with lush blackberry, black currant, and dark chocolate notes. These flavors evolve into subtle hints of leather and sweet tobacco, underscored by Coombsville’s hallmark graphite and anise spice. On the palate, this Cabernet delivers an impressive balance between structure and vibrancy. It’s bold and powerful, with a refreshing lift that speaks to the cool mornings and warm afternoons unique to Coombsville.

With an attention- getting purple-black hue, this astound- ing red is silky but manages to eke out teeth-grabbing, dusty black-tea tannins. A host of flavors, among them graphite, black raspberry, violets, and Worces- tershire, sends a message of intensity. Earth and soil notes are apparent, sur- rounding a mineral component within the wine's deep core. ~98 Tasting Panel Magazine

Excellent complexity of blackcurrant, lead pencil and oyster. Some redwood and bark. Full to medium body with wonderfully crafted tannins that run the length of the wine with so much subtle and complex character of graphite and fruit. Structured and classic. Bordeaux blend with cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot and petit verdot. ~97 James Suckling

Paul Hobb's Coombsville Cabernet was fermented with native yeasts, spending 29 days macerating with pump-overs and délestage, followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation in a barrel. The wine was aged 18 months in 53% new French oak. 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, and 4% Merlot were bottled unfined and unfiltered. Super expressive and aromatic notes of dark chocolate, iron-like minerality, and bright huckleberry fruits, with raspberry, plums and sweet baking spices. Profoundly layered, with great density balanced by a lightness of extremely fine-grained tannins, complemented by dusty, chalky minerals on the wine's full-bodied finish. ~96 Decanter

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville (83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, and 4% Merlot) is another deep purple-hued effort from Hobbs that has sensational purity in its cassis and juicy blackberry fruits. These are supported by textbook notes of graphite, freshly sharpened pencils, and spring flowers. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, with ultra-fine tannins, a seamless, elegant texture, and outstanding length, this will compete with wine two to three times the price. It will evolve for 15-20 years. ~95 Jeb Dunnuck

With concentration and density, this Cabernet Sauvignon from the internationally known Paul Hobbs spins with flavors of dried tobacco, resinous woods and a blend of sweet, warmed spices on dark fruits. ~94 Wine Enthusiast

Dense and ripe but reserved in feel, with a cool cast iron note that adds a touch of restraint to the mix of blackberry and black currant preserve flavors. Juicy, with judicious toast through the tobacco and roasted alder–accented finish. Best from 2026 through 2036. ~93 Wine Spectator

Blended from lots that didn't make the grade to be in the single-vineyard wine, Hobbs's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, with small portions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Matured in about 50% new French oak, it offers up hints of crushed stone and pencil shavings, plus scents of blueberries, cassis, loam and vanilla. It's medium to full-bodied and reasonably concentrated, with intense flavors and a velvety feel on the lingering finish. As far as Napa Cabs go, it's even a respectable value. ~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon (Coombsville) is fabulous. Rich, dark and super-expressive, the 2021 captures all the savory intensity of Coombsville. Dried herbs, leather, tobacco, chocolate, incense and cloves meld into a core of blackberry jam. Pretty floral notes and bright acids liven up the finish. Readers will find a dense, opulent Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers the goods. ~93 Vinous Media
