A true rarity in Bordeaux, Château Petit Gravet Aîné showcases one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Franc in Saint-Émilion. The 2022 vintage is composed of 90% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot, a bold statement from this historic, family-run estate.
The vineyard spans just 2 hectares on Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau, an area renowned for producing wines of depth and minerality. With vines averaging 70 years, deeply rooted in clay-limestone soils, yields are low, resulting in remarkable concentration and finesse.
2022 was a warm, dry vintage, producing small, intensely flavored berries. The estate’s deep limestone soils provided natural water retention, ensuring balance and freshness despite the heat. The result? A powerful yet refined wine with exuberant fruit, fine-grained tannins, and impeccable structure.
The wine opens with a ruby/plum hue and a perfumed bouquet of wild berries, violets, fresh mint, and tobacco, layered with charcoal, sea salt, and gamey spice. The medium to full-bodied palate strikes a perfect balance between ripeness and energy, with supple tannins and a long, elegant finish.
2022 Château Petit Gravet Aîné is a rare, complex, and profoundly expressive Saint-Émilion, built for those who appreciate Cabernet Franc at its finest.
Aging: 18 months in 100% new French oak.
Tasting Notes
90% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot. This is a wild, exotic Saint-Émilion with layers of complexity. A heady bouquet of kirsch, dried flowers, mocha, and new leather gives way to a richly textured, opulent palate. Expect waves of blackberries, violets, crushed stones, and gamey spice, all framed by ripe tannins and a long, structured finish. Vibrant yet deeply concentrated, this is a Saint-Émilion that defies convention.
Critical Reviews
Flowers, mint, charcoal, chalk, sea salt, and red fruits combine to offer an intense, spicy, fruit-packed experience with layers of energetic berries that are as elegant, as they are long, sweet, vibrant, and pure. Produced from 90% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot, this is one of the heaviest concentrations of Cabernet Franc in Bordeaux. Drink from 2027-2050. ~96 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
A blend of 90% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot, the 2022 Château Petit Gravet Aîné exhibits a ruby/plum hue as well as terrific aromatics of red, blue, and black fruits interwoven with lots of gamey, floral, and tobacco nuances. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Saint-Emilion that has ripe tannins, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. It shines even today yet is going to evolve gracefully over the coming two decades or so. ~95 Jeb Dunnuck
The 2022 Petit Gravet Aîné is a gorgeous, exotic wine. Kirsch, dried flowers, mocha and new leather open. Ripe, fleshy and layered, the 2022 is definitely on the riper side. Creamy and opulent in texture, it clearly needs time to settle down post-bottling. Today, I admire its balance. This is a wild wine that is sure to take readers on quite a ride over the coming two decades or so, maybe more. ~94 Vinous Media
