Château Mouton Rothschild was not originally included in the First Growths of Bordeaux, the estate has spent a large portion of its history making up for that fact. Mouton was the first producer to really take ownership of the entire wine making process in Bordeaux. The Château took wine from grapes to bottles starting in 1924. Prior to this estate bottling the châteaux were selling wine to negociants in barrels, leaving lots of room for inconsistency. Mouton also provides some of the prettiest bottles in Bordeaux to look at, with a new artist commissioned for each vintage to design the label art.

Château Mouton-Rothschild was once part of the Ségur ownership along with Lafite and latour. In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired the piece of land that the mouton name came along. However, it was Baron Philippe de Rothschild who elevated and made the renown of the estate with some key decisions. He established estate bottling which lead to the construction of the famous and beautiful Grand Chai.

Most Common Varietal Blend of Chateau Mouton Rothschild

  • 81% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 15% Merlot
  • 3% Cabernet Franc
  • 1% Petit Verdot

The Château Mouton Rothschild vineyard, mostly situated on a hillock called the “Plateau de Mouton” which rises to 27m above sea-level. Cabernet Sauvignon always predominates: it is Cabernet Sauvignon that gives Mouton its rich tannins, its wealth of aroma and flavour and its ageing capacity, while Merlot, an inseparable companion, brings suppleness, roundness and exceptional length. As with other top Médoc wines, the vineyard is densely planted – 10,000 vines per hectare – and the average age of the vines is around 44 years.

The grapes are hand-picked and placed in open baskets that keep them intact. After destemming, they are hand-sorted on vibrating tables. Those that pass this rigorous test are transferred into mobile bins and fed into the fermentation vats by the action of gravity alone. Thus, from vine to vat, the fruit is not subject to any non-natural pressure or constraint.

Food Pairings And Serving

Best paired with Sirloin Steak, Filet Mignon, grilled or roasted dishes, game. It is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift.

Tasting Notes

In style the wines have immense appeal, with exotic, powerful aromas of cassis, minerals, tobacco leaf and graphite, backed by an opulence on the palate and impressive length on the finish. “Flamboyant” is a word sometimes used in tasting notes, and in comparative blind tastings this attribute is frequently what sets Mouton apart. What is sure is that Mouton has often produced the “wine of the vintage”, and under Hervé Berlaud’s direction the property looks sure to consolidate its status as one of the world’s greatest.

Splendid and racy, Château Mouton-Rothschild's wines have an inimitable style that are recognized by purists from all over the world. The power and richness of the aromatic palette are revealed in a complex and refined bouquet. This bouquet offers notes of black fruit and blackcurrant, and then it evolves into spicy notes like vanilla and smoky scents like incense and cedar.

With monumental structure, the palate reveals a fleshy mouthfeel enveloped in tannins. The length of the finish with its minerality and dazzling refinement further displays the power of the wine.
