In Bordeaux, there are many historic Châteaux. On the Right Bank, in Saint-Emilion,one of the oldest and most prestigious is Château Soutard-Cadet. Soutard-Cadet traces its history back to 1513 when it was a farm with a windmill. Wine didn’t come along until later, but this property located just a short walk from the town of Saint-Emilion—with its clay and limestone soils that lie over beds of asteriated limestone—was destined for wine.
In 2015 the Lefevere Family bought Château Soutard-Cadet, bringing it to even newer heights. As owners of Château Sansonnet and Château Moulin Du Cadet, both Grand Cru Classés in Saint Emilion, they brought an extensive pedigree.
The Cuvée Victoire is Soutard-Cadet’s outstanding second wine. Second wines are often made from younger grapes than a Château’s flagship wine, but receive the same attention and care as the flagship from the same vintage, which in this case received 96 points from Jeb Dunnuck who called it “a thrill-a-minute Saint-Emilion that readers should snatch up.”
When crafting the Cuvée Victoire, the greatest care is taken when selecting grapes. These come from the Au Cadet plots, as well as ones from the plateau of Saint-Christopher des Bardes. A blend of 90% merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc grapes, this wine finds itself aging in 70% French oak barrels for 16 months. A vibrant, gourmet Saint Emilion Grand Cru. This is a wine lover's dream.

90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. This is a Merlot-driven blend with great structure, long and complex, marked by intense notes of red fruits and spices. Its volume in the mouth, its supple tannins, its long finish, and its overall balance make it a perfect representative of the vintage.
Blackberry and bark with some sandalwood and mushroom on the nose. It’s full-bodied with juicy fruit and tight, creamy tannins. Linear and racy. Gorgeous finish. Rather reserved now, but good, serious promise. Try after 2024. ~94 JS (2018 Soutard Cadet Saint Emilion Grand Cru)
The 2018 Soutard-Cadet is every bit the powerhouse it was from barrel. Rich, inky and explosive, the 2018 hits the palate with masses of blackberry jam, bittersweet chocolate, cloves, leather and scorched earth. Readers should expect a dense, hugely extracted Saint-Émilion built on textural richness.
