Syrah Master Par Excellence: 2017 Domaine Jean-Michel Gerin Saint-Joseph
When I tasted today’s offer, I got to travel to one of the most beautiful regions in the world, also known as the “The Land of Syrah”. The place that is responsible for producing some of the best wines in the entire world: Northern Rhône.
Wine Enthusiast said: “Northern Rhône is small and only made up of a dozen appellations. But it still manages to set the standard on how global Syrah is judged.”
Examples of deep, rare Syrah’s abound in this land, but the vast majority are offered at a fairly high price. Thank God for the Saint-Joseph appellation because (and quoting The New York Time’s wine critic Eric Asimov), we get to “taste the elemental aromas, flavors, and emotions, but in a more open, easier-going manner". - and at a much more affordable price, I might add.
Today’s offer is a charm, the beautiful 2017 Domaine Jean-Michel Gerin Saint-Joseph.
Jean-Michel Gerin's beautiful 3.4-acre vineyard, nestled on terraced steep slopes facing south/southeast and with granite soils, is home to some of the best value Syrahs in the region.
Of course, I want to discuss the vintage because 2017 was an outstanding year for the Northern Rhone. It received 95 Points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and James Suckling also said “The wines have depth, power, and balance. It could be like 1991 which is a legendary vintage for balance and aging”.
As a fanatic of Syrah myself, I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to get my hands on this top-notch Syrah at less than $35/bottle. Oh, and just so you know, we only have 2 cases, so my advice: ACT FAST!
“This is a very fresh, crisp, and gently grippy array of brambly red berries and milk chocolate. Fine, grippy, detailed tannins. Purchased grapes from the northern end of the appellation.” ~91 Points, James Suckling.
