More than 1300 Years of Winemaking History: 2018 Bibbiani Chianti Montalbano DOCG

Winter is so close. For some of you, the temperature is probably already winter-ish, and the ground may even be covered with snow. On many nights, you’re probably looking for a red wine to open for comfort food like pasta, stews, and hearty bean dishes. Today, we have the perfect daily drinker you’ll want to turn to for the perfect pairing for those dishes.

The harmonious and balanced 2018 Bibbiani Chianti Montalbano DOCGcomes with an impressive history. In the Middle Ages, Villa Bibbiani belonged to the Benedictine monastery. Its “modern” age began in 1700 when the Frescobaldi family—considered Italian royalty in wine and agriculture circles—purchased the villa. The family was responsible for the first vineyards and the botanical garden (still to this day) planted by Cosimo Ridolfi, the father of modern Italian agriculture. When Ridolfi created the villa’s botanical gardens, he planted more than 3,000 different species of plants and trees. That commitment to biodiversity still exists in the vineyards and in the gardens.

Today, the beautiful vineyards—planted with Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and more—extend from the slopes of Montalbano to the church of San Jacopo in Pulignano. Winemaker Leopoldo Morara brings his experience from working in well-regarded estates in France, Chile, and New Zealand to Bibbiani. Interestingly, a portion of this wine ages in amphora, a portion in stainless steel tank, and a portion in oak barrels.

“The key to making a good wine,” he says, “is maximum respect for the terroir, and we work solely along these lines.”

Morara does have fantastic terroir to work with, and for this wine, he also had a great vintage to work with, too. 2018 was a very favorable year for Chianti. Vinous Media rated 2018 94 points, saying "these wines are gracious wines of immense pleasure, the 2018s are incredibly delicious."

The Bibbiani Chianti is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo Nero e Colorino. The wine’s comforting aromas of cherry and red fruits, soft tannins, and elegance make it the perfect partner for the comfort foodsyou’ll be craving soon if you aren’t doing so already.
