“Southern charm in the Rhone” is the name that Wine Spectator used to refer to the Gigondas appellation in an article where they also stated that this region “has started to peek out from the shadows of its prestigious neighbor Châteauneuf-du-Pape as the appellation and its producers push quality forward, with wines that are certainly worthy of your attention.”
Gigondas is home to Château de Saint Cosme, the leading winery of this appellation, where the Barruol family has been producing fine wines for over 500 years. This makes it the oldest Château in the region. Today, this benchmark winery is led by Louis Barroul, who has dramatically increased the quality of the wine.
The vineyard of 37 acres is planted just next to the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain and was converted into a biodynamic in 2010. The result is impressive wines that are a wonderful reflection of their terroir. Owner Louis says “The ancient know-how, the organic viticulture and the understanding of the terroirs are part of our strong ideas. It results in purity, balance, and beauty.”
