Sieur d’Arques is one of the most historic and influential producers in Limoux, a region in southern France recognized as the birthplace of sparkling wine. The winery was founded in 1946 and has played a pivotal role in elevating the reputation of Crémant de Limoux, blending tradition with modern winemaking techniques. With over 200 winegrowers, the estate is known for crafting elegant and expressive sparkling wines, following the methods first pioneered by Benedictine monks in 1531, when the world’s first recorded sparkling wine was produced in Saint-Hilaire Abbey near Limoux.
The Grande Cuvée 1531 pays tribute to this centuries-old winemaking heritage, combining grapes from some of the finest terroirs in Limoux. The vineyards benefit from a unique microclimate, influenced by both Atlantic and Mediterranean weather patterns, which allows for slow ripening, vibrant acidity, and exceptional freshness. The soil diversity, ranging from limestone to clay and sandstone, enhances the complexity and depth of the wines.
The Sieur d’Arques Aimery 1531 Crémant de Limoux Grande Cuvée NV is crafted from a meticulous blend of 60% Chardonnay, 20% Chenin Blanc, and 20% Pinot Noir. Made using the traditional method, it undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle, followed by 12 months of aging on the lees, developing fine, persistent bubbles and a creamy texture. This Crémant is bright and aromatic, offering notes of elderflower, acacia honey, green apple, and citrus, with a lively, elegant finish. With a 90-point rating from Decanter, this wine is a true reflection of Limoux’s sparkling wine legacy, bringing together heritage, innovation, and finesse.

A delicious sparkling here offering delicate bubbles, zesty mouthwatering acidity and a hint of sweetness. It has notes of elderflower, acacia honey and soft toasted hazelnut as well as flavours of green apple and citrus fruits. This would definitely be a great apéritif wine but as it has a gourmet feel it would work excellently with food and pair well with salmon, prawns or any fresh fish dishes. ~90 Decanter
