For nearly 400 years, the Thanisch family has been at the forefront of Mosel winemaking, crafting some of the finest Rieslings in Germany. The estate, Weingut Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Thanisch, has been passed down through generations of women winemakers, beginning with Katharina Thanisch, a pioneering figure who became a founding member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter) in 1910. Today, the estate is led by Sofia Thanisch, who continues the family’s deep-rooted tradition of producing wines that reflect the purity and finesse of Mosel’s legendary vineyards.
Nestled along the steep slate slopes of the Mosel River, the estate’s holdings include some of the region’s most coveted sites, such as Bernkasteler Doctor, Bernkasteler Lay, and Graacher Himmelreich. The Bernkasteler Lay vineyard, where this wine originates, is known for its Devonian slate soils, which provide exceptional drainage and impart a signature minerality to the wines. The cooler climate and steep slopes allow for slow ripening, resulting in wines of vibrant acidity, delicate fruit, and remarkable aging potential.
The 2022 Bernkasteler Lay Kabinett Cuvée Christina is a pristine expression of the vintage, showcasing a crystalline purity and mineral-driven intensity. This wine presents a fresh, clear nose with bright citrus, stone fruit, and classic Mosel slate aromas. On the palate, it is lush yet precise, balancing its natural sweetness with racy acidity, making it both elegant and highly age-worthy. Awarded 95 points by James Suckling, this wine is a testament to the estate’s unwavering dedication to crafting Rieslings of exceptional quality and depth.
Aging: Matured in traditional Mosel Fuder (large oak casks) to preserve freshness and enhance complexity.
A blend of 100% Riesling, this wine is a bright and crystalline expression of Mosel terroir. It opens with aromas of citrus, stone fruit, and classic slate minerality. The palate is lush yet precise, balancing natural sweetness with vibrant acidity, leading to a long, elegant, and refreshing finish.
A great Mosel Kabinett wine that’s just rippling with peach and honeysuckle aromas, yet remains delicate and silky on the extremely precise and incredibly clean palate. Super-bright finish, but with moderate acidity in the Mosel context, which is a rare combination. Drink or hold. ~95 James Suckling
Vinified in traditional fuder (of which one was new) for 14 weeks, the 2021 Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Kabinett "Cuvée Christina" offers a clear, bright and flinty, very delicate but also aromatic and slate-driven, wonderfully reductive and elegant bouquet. Lush yet crystalline and elegant on the palate, this is a very fine, pure, filigreed and precise Badstube whose nearly 50 grams per liter of residual sugar are uplifted by the mineral substance and precise acidity of this promising Kabinett. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP in July 2022. ~93 Robert Parker
