For nearly 400 years, the Thanisch family has been at the forefront of Mosel winemaking, crafting some of the region’s most iconic Rieslings. The estate, Weingut Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Thanisch, has a deep-rooted tradition in producing wines of purity, balance, and elegance. A pioneering winery, it was among the founding members of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter) in 1910, emphasizing quality and authenticity in German winemaking. Today, Sofia Thanisch continues the family's legacy, overseeing vineyards that have been in the family for generations and maintaining the estate’s commitment to tradition and terroir.
The Bernkasteler Badstube vineyard, where this wine originates, is one of Mosel’s most celebrated sites, known for its steep, south-facing slopes and Devonian slate soils. These conditions create an ideal microclimate for Riesling, allowing slow ripening that enhances both freshness and complexity. Vines, some on original rootstocks, range from 20 to 40 years old, yielding fruit that reflects the vineyard’s distinct minerality and finesse.
The 2022 Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett Feinherb is a stunning expression of the vintage, balancing lively fruit, crisp acidity, and a touch of natural sweetness. Made from hand-harvested grapes that undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, the wine is aged in small stainless steel casks to preserve its vibrant character. Awarded 93 points by James Suckling, this wine showcases the estate’s expertise in crafting refined, terroir-driven Rieslings that can be enjoyed young or aged to develop even greater depth.
Aging: Matured in small stainless steel casks to preserve freshness and purity.
A blend of 100% Riesling, this wine presents aromas of ripe apple, white peach, and fresh pineapple, complemented by a delicate minerality. The palate is juicy and vibrant, balancing natural sweetness with crisp acidity, leading to a long, mineral-driven finish that lingers elegantly.
What a fascinating cool and dark nose this has for the solar vintage! It makes me think of a waterfall surrounded by moss and ferns. On the light and sleek palate this Mosel Kabinett is elegant and restrained. This will strike many wine drinkers around the globe as dry enough. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling
