Australia's Leading Cabernet Producer: 2019 Penley Steyning Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra Australia
We know a few of you are Cab lovers. Okay, more than just a few. Cabernet Sauvignon is one of our top-selling wines here at BHW. If you’re one of our red lovers, listen up. What Napa is to California, Coonawarra is to Australia—ground zero for Cabernet Sauvignon. But the biggest difference here is that it’s virtually impossible to find outstanding Napa Cab under $30 soooo…. we have to look around! Today’s under $30 wine—that drinks WAY above its price—comes from the region’s leading Cabernet producer.
Penley Estate is an undertaking between family members of the pioneering Penfolds and Tolley estates, Penley produces terroir-driven wines with a character that’s distinctively Coonawarra. In addition to its optimal terroir for growing Cab, Penley’s has the optimal winemaker for crafting Cab.
Winemaker Kate Goodman is one of Australia’s leading contemporary winemakers. Australian Women in Wine named her Winemaker of the Year in 2018. She’s made wine for some of Australia’s most emblematic wineries such as Wirra Wirra in McLaren Vale, Tim Kanppstein in Clare Valley, Seppelt in Great Western, and Punt Road in Yarra Valley.
For Penley, she’s crafted a contemporary expression of Coonawarra Cab from estate grapes. The wine's name, Steyning, comes from the birthplace of Penfolds’ founder, Christopher Rawson Penfold. Complex and thought-provoking, it’s medium-bodied with layers of cassis (a Connawarra tell-tale), herbs, dark chocolate, and toasted French oak.
This Australian Cab is ready to drink now or hold on and let it evolve. Its savory tannins will make it a great steak wine so fire up the grill, open the bottle, and enjoy a classic pairing made even better with our 40% discount!
