Wine drinkers take notice! Millennials, Gen-X, and even Baby Boomers, now is the time to buy wines to age. All indications are the release of the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino, from Tuscany, Italy, will break records as the wine to buy now and hold.

Hold it so you can savor it with your wife (or husband) on your 20th wedding anniversary for an experience she’ll never forget. Or share it with your child on their 21st birthday to introduce them to the joys of aged wine.

The stunning 2015 Brunello vintage breaks the rules for younger generations. Don’t drink the wine now. Have patience to appreciate it at its best.

Greg Martellotto of Big Hammer Wines, a DTC (direct to consumer) online wine retailer, was in Italy recently tasting these wines, and he agrees.

“There hasn't been this much buzz and excitement about a Brunello vintage since 1997, 2001, and 2010,” says Greg. “I wouldn't be surprised if the 2015 vintage mostly sells out within 9-10 months after release.”

With limited quantities and high demand because of such a great vintage, now is the time to make a move for those sitting on the sidelines to own this truly flawless vintage.

Winemaking in Brunello di Montalcino dates back hundreds of years, but official vintages date from the mid to late-1800s.

Brunello comes from the Sangiovese Grosso grape. This larger grape, a clone of Sangiovese, has a thicker skin which imparts more complex and deeper flavors, a longer finish, and stronger tannins in the wine. Higher acidity keeps the wine fresh over the years.

“The 2015 vintage is a historical year for Brunello di Montalcino, and nobody should miss it. The wines show impressive precision of vivid fruit, fine tannins, and freshness in acidity despite their ripeness and richness, which makes them some of the most exciting in years.” James Suckling

2015 started with much rain and variable weather in the spring. Summer’s temperatures were higher than average with low rainfall until late August or early September. Temperatures then moderated, allowing for grapes to mature perfectly. These conditions resulted in a wine with highly integrated tannins and enough acidity to allow for long aging.

Wines throughout the region are excellent due to overall improvements in vineyard and cellar practices. Many of the hundreds of growers and bottlers will release outstanding wines.

Look for DOCG wines and those from The Consorzio of Brunello producers. Because of a DOCG regulation, the region’s second wine offers incredible value for the price. The rule requires 30% of each Brunello vintage to be incorporated into Rosso di Montalcino.

While 8 to 10 years is typical for aging Brunello, the 2015 vintage will tempt some people to drink the wines much sooner.

But imagine how they will taste 10 years into the future. Beyond perfection? How about transcendent?
