Once upon a time, a young Luc Schweitzer, en route to boarding school, would pass by a stunning property in Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux. It caught his eye and captured his imagination. Fast forward to 1993, Luc, now a winegrower following in his parents’ footsteps, made his dream a reality by purchasing Château Bourdieu. And thank heavens he did—because what a journey it’s been!
Luc didn’t just buy a vineyard; he gave it a soul. With its argilo-calcareous soils (a fancy way of saying “this dirt is pure gold for vines”), Château Bourdieu had all the right ingredients to craft extraordinary wines. But Luc wanted more than “good enough.” He wanted excellence. So, he modernized, expanded, and poured his heart into this venture, doubling down on quality. By the time he launched the flagship vintage, N°1, in 2000, it was clear: this was no ordinary Bordeaux.
The 2023 vintage is the culmination of decades of dedication, and it’s got quite the resume. Grown in a vineyard spanning over 185 acres—thanks to Luc’s knack for snagging prime plots—the grapes benefit from clay and limestone soils and a unique microclimate.
No shortcuts here, either. The grapes are hand-harvested (because machines just don’t have the finesse), destemmed, and fermented with zero added yeast. Château Bourdieu lets nature take the wheel, allowing the vineyard’s character to shine through. Then, the wine is aged in a combination of stainless steel and French oak barrels, undergoing malolactic fermentation to bring out that signature silky texture.
The result? A red wine that’s as smooth as Luc’s vision. This is pure, unadulterated Bordeaux brilliance.
But Château Bourdieu isn’t just Luc’s dream anymore. His sons, Richard and Ludovic, have stepped up to carry the torch. It wasn’t always their plan—winegrowing didn’t seem so glamorous when they were younger—but over time, they realized the magic in what their dad built. Now, they’re all in, and it shows in every bottle.
Drinking the 2023 Château Bourdieu is more than enjoying a glass of wine. It’s sipping on decades of passion, innovation, and a touch of destiny.
Good news for “classic” Bordeaux lovers! The 2023 vintage brings lighter, fresher wines with lower alcohol levels, emphasizing savory, earthy, and mineral notes over juicy fruit. Higher acidity adds elegance and energy, making these medium-bodied wines a true classic throwback
