Since the early 1920s,the Cuilleron family has been crafting exceptional wines in the Northern Rhône Valley, particularly in the prestigious Condrieu and St. Joseph appellations.
Yves Cuilleron is a winemaker who studied in Burgundy before embarking on his illustrious career in 1987. His expertise and love for the craft have expanded the Cuilleron estate, making it a reference point for Northern Rhône wines.
The Cuilleron estate, located in the picturesque village of Verlieu, spans an impressive 128 acres. Within this vast vineyard, 54 acres are dedicated to the prized Condrieu appellation. Here, amidst the south/southeast-facing terraces overlooking Chavanay, lies the secret to the 2022 Yves Cuilleron Condrieu Les Chaillets – the finest and oldest Viognier vines on the estate.
Les Chaillets, named after the local terraces, is a stunning Viognier that epitomizes the elegance and complexity of Condrieu wines. Planted on biotite-rich granite soils, these vines produce grapes that are meticulously fermented using native yeasts. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in temperature-controlled barrels and large casks, followed by nine months of aging on the lees. This careful process ensures no battonage or racking, preserving the wine’s natural flavors and textures.
Yves Cuilleron is committed to sustainable and organic farming practices. No insecticides are used, ensuring that each bottle of Les Chaillets is not only a delight to the palate but also a tribute to eco-friendly winemaking.
Aging: 50% in Burgundy barrels without racking and eight months on lees.
Tasting Notes: 100% Viognier. Nose with aromas of stone fruits (apricot, peach), honey and flowers. Some notes of sweet spices and toasted dried fruits. Rich and gourmet palate. The slender finish is marked by the mineral freshness of granite and gives this wine great depth.
Yves’ 2022 Condrieu Les Chaillets is absolutely brilliant, and I'd put this up with the finest in the appellation.Ripe, intense aromatics of ripe pineapple, honeyed flowers, orange blossom, and subtle floral notes all define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, beautiful concentration and depth, and one heck of a great finish. If you get a chance, buy it. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck
A well-composed, poised and lively Condrieu. It shows notes of yellow plums, lemons, wild herbs and a touch of verbena. Medium-bodied with a succulent development. It’s textural and precise, with good volume on the mid-palate. Succulent and flavorful finish. ~93 James Suckling
The 2022 Condrieu Les Chaillets exhales marked cedar and vanilla elements alongside ripe peach, quince and apricot. Showing a little more substance than the La Petite Côte from the same vintage, the well-made 2022 Les Chaillets touches the palate with ample flavor concentration and refreshing acidity. ~92 Vinous Media
