About The Wine

Stefano Inama didn't just make another Soave — he built a white wine monument. I Palchi marks the turning point when Garganega proved it could compete with the world's great Burgundies, and it did it on volcanic terroir that's been terraced for half a century. The name refers to the pergola-trained slopes of Monte Foscarino, where the Inama family owns 57 acres of old vines — some planted 70 years ago — rooted deep into mineral-rich volcanic clay and basalt.

The constant wind off Lake Garda batters the fruit, shrinking the berries and thickening the skins. That natural concentration process is the secret: smaller grapes, more intensity, more aromatic punch. The harvest is obsessive — hand-picked two or three times per plot, then sorted again at the winery. Stefano's son Matteo puts it plainly: "I like to work with dirty wine, and I can do this because my grapes are clean, clean, clean." Half the wine ferments wild in used barriques; the rest in other vessels. It's an oxidative, full-lees approach that builds texture without losing the volcanic snap.

The 2022 is straw-yellow with green reflections, opening on stone fruit and citrus layered with camomile and white flowers. The volcanic minerality hits immediately — salty, ashy, basalt-driven. The palate is full-bodied and silky, with mango, pear, and a hint of vanilla riding lively acidity, finishing in a mineral echo that lingers for minutes. East-facing vineyards catch the morning sun but dodge the afternoon heat, preserving the floral lift and the stony core.

This wine will cellar a decade-plus without breaking a sweat. Pull the cork tonight or tuck it away — either way, you're holding one of the finest expressions of Garganega ever bottled.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"A complex, mineral wine with apricots and lemon peel, angelica and mangoes. Full-bodied and richly flavored with mango and citrus flavors, vibrant and mineral acidity and a smooth finish. Precise and refreshing. Fermented and aged in large oak barrels. Drink or hold." ~96 James Suckling

"The 2022 Soave Classico I Palchi wafts up with a smoky, expressive blend of rosemary, gingery spice and musky citrus complicating crushed apples. It is silken and opulent in feel, enveloping the palate with ripe pit fruits, coming across as weighty and rich yet wonderfully balanced. Nuances of grapefruit mix with inner sage and hints of candied lime as the 2022 tapers off with excellent length yet remains wonderfully fresh." ~94 Vinous Media

"This is the top-end Garganega from the talented Inama family. It included the words "Grande Cuvée" in its name until the previous vintage made. The 2022 Soave Classico Foscarino I Palchi is a beautiful wine with a tight vein of crispness and lemony tartness that follows the wine from start to finish, giving it firmness and lasting staying power. There is ample textural fiber at the back, more than enough to make this wine feel important and multidimensional. This 17-hectare vineyard sits in basalt lava soils. The wine is partially fermented in oak (with 30% neutral and new barrique and 50% botte grande) and 20% in stainless steel. Production is 10,000 bottles." ~94 Wine Advocate
