Nestled in the heart of Pauillac, one of the most prestigious appellations in Bordeaux, Château Haut-Batailley embodies the elegance and power that define this storied region. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, the estate has flourished under the stewardship of the Cazes family, who acquired it in 2017. With deep roots in Bordeaux winemaking, the Cazes family—also owners of Château Lynch-Bages—has elevated Haut-Batailley, refining its style while preserving its distinct identity.
The 2022 Château Haut-Batailley is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, a classic Pauillac composition that highlights the strength of its terroir. The vineyard, spanning 40 hectares, is planted on the appellation’s signature deep gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and encourage the vines to develop deep root systems, fostering concentration and complexity in the fruit.
The 2022 vintage was marked by record-breaking heat and drought, yet Bordeaux’s resilient terroirs yielded wines of extraordinary depth. At Haut-Batailley, careful vineyard management, including early pruning and canopy adjustments, helped the vines maintain freshness despite the dry conditions. The result is a structured, refined Pauillac, balancing ripeness with lifted aromatics and polished tannins—a testament to both terroir and meticulous craftsmanship.
With its refined power, 2022 Château Haut-Batailley exemplifies the evolution of the estate under the Cazes family, cementing its place as one of Pauillac’s rising stars.
Aging: 12 months in 65% new French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes
70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot. A polished, elegantly structured Pauillac that captures the essence of its terroir. Layers of blackcurrant, red cherry, and blueberry unfold alongside hints of lead pencil, tobacco leaf, and crushed stone. Subtle floral tones of iris and violets add refinement, while the palate delivers a seamless balance of power and finesse. Fine-grained tannins guide the wine to a long, mineral-driven finish, echoing Pauillac’s signature iron-tinged purity and precision.
Critical Reviews
Juicy red, blue, and black fruits, scorched earth, sappy flowers, and chalky minerality all emerge from the 2022 Château Haut-Batailley, a beautifully pure, polished, elegant Pauillac that's medium to full-bodied has a layered, elegant mouthfeel, and ultra-fine tannins. I love its overall balance, and this is up with the finest vintages I've tasted from this château. The 2022 is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, raised in 65% new French oak. It’s going to benefit from just 4-5 years of bottle age (it’s far from unapproachable today) and have 30 years of overall longevity. ~95 Jeb Dunnuck
Dark in color and profile, the wine is vibrant, crisp, and juicy, showcasing black, red, and blue fruits, along with pepper, flowers, and currants on the nose. On the palate, it is chewy, intense, powerful, tannic, and long. The finish lingers with its fruit and a minty edge in the endnote. The wine consists of a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. Drink from 2029-2055. ~95 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
The 2022 Haut-Batailley has a wonderfully defined, mineral-driven bouquet with a touch of vibrant black fruit and perhaps more focus than previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp acidity. This elegant Haut-Batailley builds beautifully while retaining tension and poise on the finish. This might be the best vintage to date under the Cazes family. ~94 Vinous Media
Juicy and fresh, with a mix of red and black currant and cherry notes infused with an iris accent. Shows purity through the iron-tinged finish. An elegantly styled Pauillac that should age gracefully in the cellar. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2040. ~94 Wine Spectator
The 2022 Haut-Batailley exhibits rich aromas of cherry preserve, jammy berries and creamy new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ripe and extracted palate that's chunky and muscular, concluding with a vanillin-inflected finish. ~91+ Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
