About the Wine
If you know Nebbiolo, you know Vietti. And if you don’t—this is where you begin.
These are not just wines. They are time capsules of terroir, sculpted with precision and reverence by one of Italy’s most iconic estates. Vietti’s single-vineyard expressions are must-haves for any serious collector—delivering Grand Cru-level quality at a fraction of what you'd pay in Burgundy.
“Vietti makes some of the cleanest, most terroir-driven wines in Piedmont, with a rare subtlety and elegance.” ~ Wine Spectator
Founded in the 1800s, Vietti’s destiny changed forever in 1960 when Luciana Vietti married Alfredo Currado—one of the founding fathers of modern Barolo. Alfredo’s legacy is legend: he was among the first to bottle Barolo by cru, showcasing the individuality of Piedmont’s grand vineyards long before it became fashionable.
Luca Currado, Vietti’s former winemaker, brought a résumé that reads like a global wine hall of fame—Opus One, Mouton Rothschild, Simi—before returning to his roots to craft wines that Forbes has called “some of the finest Italian wine labels.” Under his leadership, Vietti earned its place among the “25 Best Barolo Producers” in the world.
Continuing this legacy, Eugenio Palumbo, with over 23 years at Vietti, has been instrumental in the winery’s success. After the Krause family took over in 2016, Eugenio expanded the estate with sought-after Barolo and Barbaresco Crus and launched the Derthona Timorasso project. Today, he builds on Vietti’s rich heritage, crafting wines that combine tradition with innovation.
These wines are pure, poised, and profoundly expressive. They are, quite simply, what Nebbiolo was always meant to be. Own a piece of Barolo history.
Sourced from the legendary Rocche di Castiglione Falletto, one of the oldest and most revered crus in Barolo, this wine comes from vineyards with vines planted in 1940, 1950 and 1968. With southern exposure and marl-rich soils, the site yields Nebbiolo of remarkable depth and precision at 330 metres elevation.
Traditional winemaking includes a 3-week maceration with submerged cap and aging in oak for 30 months. The result is a ruby-red wine with notes of mandarin, rose petal, and ripe red fruit. Silky, balanced, and long on the finish—this is classic, cellar-worthy Barolo.
Tasting Notes
100% Nebbiolo. The nose is complex and elegant. Emerging notes of mandarin, ripe red fruit and rose petal, accompanied by a hint of chamomile. It is fresh, balanced, silky, enveloping and full-bodied on the palate. The tannins are prominent yet well-integrated. The finish is long and persistent. We recommend decanting a few hours before serving.
Critical Reviews
This is a serious beauty that reminds us of the brilliant work underway at this leading estate. Yes, ownership has changed over recent years, but this wine remains "Rocche-solid." From an epic vintage, the Vietti 2021 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a classic with those elegant mineral notes of glacial till and flake salt followed by carefully ripened fruit, blackcurrant and a finely tuned floral note of fragrant tea leaf that hits the high notes. The effect is ethereal but also precise. Fruit comes from two parcels, one planted in 1958 and the other in 1969, and the blend is half of each fermented together. Fruit was picked on October 1st, and the wine saw 24 days on the skins. The first year this wine was produced is 1961. The Rocche di Castiglione site has 35% sand with marl soils that continue to evolve, kicking out more new sand. Only 3,728 bottles exist, and that's the bad news. ~98+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2021 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is elegant, floral and lifted. I also find it a bit reticent in the early going. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, white pepper and spice open with some coaxing. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon, the wine's considerable sensuality notwithstanding. ~96+ Vinous Media
Aromas of red fruit, strawberries, raspberries, dried herbs, violets and crushed stones. The palate is juicy and full-bodied with fine-grained tannins that turn chewy toward the finish but balance the core of pretty fruit. Better from 2027. ~96 James Suckling
