About The Wine

By 1995, the Alvarez family had built Vega Sicilia into one of the world's most revered estates. Rather than rest on that legacy, they looked downstream—100 kilometers west along the Duero River to Toro, a rustic, boulder-strewn region where old-vine Tempranillo (locally called Tinta de Toro) had survived in obscurity. After a year of research and nearly a hundred vinification trials, they planted their stake in San Roman de Hornija and spent a decade fine-tuning a single objective: maximum elegance from a place that doesn't give it easily.

Pintia is a single-label wine—every vintage represents the estate's best expression of that harvest. The 96-hectare vineyard is farmed sustainably, with no chemical fertilizers, insecticides, or herbicides. Grapes are hand-harvested into 12-kilogram boxes, cold-rested for 12 hours to preserve intensity, then double-sorted before fermentation in wooden tanks. After malolactic in barrel, the wine spends 12 months in 70% French and 30% American oak, followed by a minimum of 12 months in bottle before release—a deliberate delay that allows the oak to integrate and the texture to refine.

Toro's continental climate and high-altitude vineyards produce dark, brooding fruit—blackberry, graphite, dried olive—but the 2021 vintage was warm and powerful, so the winemaking team dialed back extraction, introduced amphorae into the elevage, and extended bottle time to 30 months. The result is a wine with the region's intensity but an unusually smooth texture: rose petal florals, strawberry-like fruit, chalky backbone, and a finish that draws out infinitely on the palate.

This is Tempranillo that punches like the Ribera heavyweights upstream but costs a fraction of what Vega Sicilia commands. The Alvarez family doesn't do vanity projects—if they spent a decade in Toro, there's something here worth your attention. Pull the cork tonight or cellar it a decade. Either way, you're drinking the work of one of Spain's most meticulous winemaking families, from old vines in a region finally getting its due.

THE PRODUCER

Vega Sicilia

Bodegas Vega Sicilia is located in the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen in the Province of Valladolid, Castile and León, northern Spain. The Álvarez family are members of the Primum Familiae Vini. The name Vega refers to the green vegetation that grows along the riverbank of the Duero; Sicilia refers to Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians.

The winery has no connection to the island of Sicily or Italian wines. Launched in 1991, Alion was conceived as a bold experiment to create the most contemporary style of Ribera del Duero while preserving the tradition of its legendary parent, Vega Sicilia. Located 15 km from Vega Sicilia, on the road to Peñafiel in the heart of the Ribera del Duero.
