About The Wine

Sur Roches means "on the rocks," and the name is literal. The vines sit at the top of the slope in Volnay, near the Pommard border. The soil is thin and stony, and water runs right through it.

It was one of the first plots Pierre Boillot worked after taking over the family vines in the 1950s. His grandson Maxime took over the estate in 2016, two years after Pierre died.

Maxime didn't start in wine. He spent ten years as a race car mechanic. Then he came home, and now he makes the wine alongside his uncle, Philippe Boillot.

Ask Maxime to introduce himself with one wine and, in his words, "it would definitely be Volnay Sur-Roches." He built the rest of the domaine around it.

The grapes are picked by hand and fermented as whole clusters, stems and all. The wine ages in older barrels, so the oak stays in the background. The 2021 is medium-bodied, with cherry, strawberry and a hint of peony.

I'd open it with roast chicken or a mushroom risotto. Just don't take the name literally. No ice.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Dubuet-Boillot has an affinity for this site at the top of the slope in thin, poor, well-drained soils. He typically ferments the grapes entirely as whole clusters since he feels that the vines ripen the stems well. The result has a reasonably light colour and a perfumed, cherry-scented fruit with accents of violets and wild herbs. The texture is fine but tannic and grippy, and it has a lovely, lingering line stretching into an impressive finish. This should open well within a year or two and drink for a decade afterwards. ~93 Decanter
