About The Wine

Founded in 1960 by Sergio and Carla Zenato on the banks of Lake Garda, the family estate has grown into one of Veneto's most respected producers — pioneering the development of the region's native varietals and building a reputation for exceptional Amarone. Today the second generation, daughter Nadia and son Alberto, carry the torch: Nadia oversees sales and marketing while Alberto directs every aspect of production, expanding the family's footprint across Lugana, Valpolicella, and Bolgheri.

This Amarone Classico is where Zenato's mastery lives. The blend — Corvina for its intense marasca cherry and drying resilience, Rondinella for dark color and floral lift, with touches of Oseleta for structure and Croatina for youthful fruit — captures the heart of Valpolicella's tradition. The grapes are left to dry for several months before vinification, concentrating sugars and aromas into something dense, complex, and built for the long haul. Then 36 months in oak. The result is a wine that's immediately approachable yet unmistakably ageworthy.

The 2020 shows as intense ruby with garnet edges. On the nose: ripe cherry, plum, vanilla, cocoa, tobacco, leather — the full Amarone spectrum. The palate is robust and full-bodied, balanced by bright acidity and well-integrated tannins. Dried fruit, red fruit jam, spice, and a lingering warm finish. Velvety, rounded, enveloping — with the kind of glyceric texture that makes lesser reds feel thin.

This is the kind of Amarone that proves why the style commands respect: majestic, intense, and built to cellar a decade or more if you can keep your hands off it.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Restrained fruitiness with aromas of raspberries and earth, alongside a complex spicy blend of freshly ground black pepper, milk, mint, bay leaf and cocoa powder. Very youthful. Full-bodied, dense and balanced, with savory flavors of chocolate and cherries, super-tasty style, tight, chalky yet ripe tannins and a fresh, cleansing acidity. Toasty finish. Drinkable now, but best in a year or two. ~96 James Suckling

~95 Luca Maroni

Deep black ruby red colour. Very fragrant, inviting nose of elderberry, cassis, dried violet and dark chocolate, fine wood. Hearty on the palate, with exciting fruit and tightly woven tannins, plus beautiful ripeness and great length with savoury aromas. ~94 Falstaff
