The wines of Ormes de Pez are powerful but stand out for their harmony. Wines of pleasure and indulgence, they combine roundness and fleshiness with the typical elegance of Saint-Estèphe.
The wine is a rich, full, and generous style dominated by Merlot and a large proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon to combine longevity and flexibility. They know how to seduce in their early youth and gain finesse after several years of aging.
Located in the beautiful Medoc peninsula, Château Ormes de Pez enjoys the mildness of a temperate oceanic climate. The vineyard is divided into two distinct terroirs: gravelly plots, on soils composed of quartz and rolled pebbles where Cabernet flourishes, and the clay-sandy plots are perfectly suited for Merlot. These plots are very representative of the Saint-Estèphe appellation.
Managed using sustainable farming practices with an average vine age of 35 years old. Due to the high quality associated with the Cazes family, this wine remains one of the most popular Cru Bourgeois Bordeaux wines.
2020 was a great year for the Left Bank. Vinous Media awarded this year with a 97-point review and said: "Two thousand-twenty is an exceptional vintage for Bordeaux, certainly the best in the 2018-2020 trilogy. Quality is very, very high."
Aging: 15 months in French oak, 45% new
Tasting Notes
50% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot A harmonious, spicy, and racy wine. It seduces you with its opulence, elegance, and roundness. The palate develops powerful tannins while keeping a smooth and fleshy side.
Critical Reviews
Blueberry, raspberry and cassis, there is concentration but also juice. Merlot-dominant (following a restructuring of the vineyard to better align grapes with terroir) with bite and freshness. A lovely smoky edge here, this is another successful vintage for Ormes de Pez. 4% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3.69ph. 45% new oak. A yield of 42hl/ha which was not as low here as at Lynch Bages because of more clay in the soils, and because the Merlot was less impacted by the drought than the Cabernet Sauvignon. ~93 Decanter
Love this wine, with its punchy stamp of St Estèphe, with powerful black fruits and fresh acidities, both enticing and appealing while extremely unfussy. The tannins are serious and a little chunky, but have plenty of character and there is appealing gunsmoke and salinity on the finish. 3.69ph, 45% new oak. ~93 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
Bitter chocolate, blackberries, dried mint and tobacco leaves on the nose. Firm and linear, with a medium body and tight tannins. Tangy acidity. Sharp and clear cut. 54% merlot, the highest percentage ever, the rest cabernet sauvignon with a touch of petit verdot. ~92 James Suckling
Fresh and direct, with lilac and savory notes running with a core of damson plum and red cherry coulis. Reveals a piercing iron note on the sneaky long finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. ~92 Wine Spectator
A blend of 54% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2020 Château Ormes De Pez offers up a great perfume of red and black currants, sweet tobacco, sandalwood, and spice. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with ripe tannins and good overall balance, it's another terrific 2020 that offers pleasure even today yet will evolve for 15+ years if well stored. ~92 Jeb Dunnuck
The 2020 Ormes de Pez has a more open nose than its peers, leaning more toward red fruit as hints of potpourri and rosemary lend complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. There's quite a lot of extraction noticeable in this Saint-Estèphe, as well as a grippy, saline finish. It will require cellaring for several years before it entertains drinkability. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. ~92 Vinous Media
Aromas of sweet cherries, berries and spices framed by creamy new oak, introduce the 2020 Ormes de Pez, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine that's polished and seamless, with a generous core of fruit and an extroverted, charming profile. ~91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
