About the Wine

Dr. Tom Cullity, a well-known cardiologist, is a very respected name in Australia’s wine industry. His passion for wine started while working in a Hospital in Europe in 1950. This passion grew so much, that upon his return to his homeland, he had one goal in mind: “to produce fine wines in Western Australia.”

This goal led him to start the search for the best land to plant his first vineyard. He found a little paradise in Margaret River where he planted 19 acres, including the Houghton clone Cabernet Sauvignon, the core of Margaret River’s finest Cabernets.

Thanks to Tom's tenacity and persistence, much of the fame and prestige that Margaret River Valley enjoys today, is owed to him. He was one of the leaders and pioneers in starting the Margaret River Wine Region.

Vasse Felix, was established more than 55 years ago. This winery is Margaret River's founding wine estate. Today, Vasse Felix has 4 different vineyards located in some of the best terroirs in the region. All the vineyards are managed with organic viticulture and minimal intervention, following the mantra that “great wines are made in the vineyard, and they must be authentic expressions of their place.”

Bart Molony is the man behind these amazing wines. He joined the estate in 2004, and since then, he has been achieving award-winning wines. In 2011, Bart was awarded the Margaret River Wine Industry Association ‘Viti Excellence.” In 2012, he was named “Australian Winemaker of the Year” by Gourmet Traveller and one of his masterpieces, the 2010 Heytesbury Chardonnay, became one of the most awarded wines in Australian history with 11 trophies.

But awards don’t end up here, in 2012, the winery was recognized among the “Top 100 International Winery” by Wine & Spirits, awarded “Wine, Winery & Winemaker of Year” by the Good Wine Guide and in 2018 it was recognized “New World Winery of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast.

2019 Vasse Felix Premier Chardonnay reflects the greatness of the Margaret River Valley. This is a pure, elegant, and vibrant Chardonnay that embraces "the region's powerful fruit with complexity and restraint to express the environment, with the hallmarks of Vasse Felix's premier vineyards.”

Aging: 9 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 100% Chardonnay. A wealthy, complex perfume of lemon pie crust mingles with hints of pineapple and buttery apple. Subtle secondary notes of nougat, spiced oak and croissant bring depth to the appealing bouquet. A full-bodied palate with a fine structural backbone. Arrives soft and rich with a creamy, broad fruit base. A lovely, fine acid line maintains vibrancy, while wood spice and custard cream flavors extend the long, dry finish.

Reviews

This classic wine is rich and concentrated yet bright and elegant. Citrus, melon rind, oyster shell, toasted brioche, and nutty notes flow into a beautifully constructed palate. There's crackling acidity straight out of the gate and subtle, toasty oak to ground it. Slippery and slinky, with salinity and depth of flavor, this is a finessed, balanced wine. ~95 Wine Enthusiast

Intense nose of flint, grilled peach, dried lemon, mango, hawthorn, toast, and smoked almond. Full-bodied, yet tight and refined, with bright acidity. Compact, concentrated and delicious, with a long, lively finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap. ~94 James Suckling

Intense and generous, with shadings of nutmeg and cardamom to give a warmth to the peach, citrus, and melon flavors at the core. Mouthwatering acidity keeps the flavors fresh and focused. Drink now. 5,000 cases made, 150 cases imported. ~92 Wine Spectator

Vasse Felix is one of the great names of Margaret River in Western Australia, and I was super-impressed by their top 'Heytesbury' Chardonnay 2019 recently (94 points), but this is their estate wine at around half the price but it runs its big brother close on style and quality. Plenty of flinty, cordite nuances to the ripe and fleshy peach and cooler Asian pear fruit, a nougat softness adding another layer. In the mouth, it strikes that lovely balance between oak-derived coffee and toast, sweet and succulent fruit, and that nervy edge of cool mineral acidity. Very stylish. ~92 Tom Cannavan

Oaky, juicy wine with sweet baking spices, white peach, and grapefruit peel character. Good length and a pleasing, saline freshness at the end. ~91 Decanter
