"This suave expression of pure Aglianico is going to win a lot of hearts. You get a little bit of new barrique spice, and it’s wonderfully integrated. This drinks like a baby Taurasi, but it’s much more accessible." ~92 Points, Vinous Media.
Have you ever heard of the Aglianico grape? Due to its ancient origins, it’s believed to be one of the varietals that have been most consumed throughout human history. Here's an opportunity to taste a luscious Aglianico at a ridiculous price! An extraordinary, structured, and beautiful wine from the classic region of Campania.
The surname Mastroberardino is synonymous with wine in Italy. This family is largely responsible for the resurgence of wine culture in the Campania after World War II.
The winemaking history of this family dates to more than 10 generations, from the 18th century. A story of passion and strength, a story about rebuilding all the damage that war can cause. Antonio Mastroberardino, who was the 9th generation, fought in World War II. He returned to his home in Atripalda to find what would be a nightmare, his family's wine estate destroyed due to the war and all the negative consequences that follow a war. Antonio, devastated by the war and the conditions in which he found the family’s patrimony, decided to start from scratch and rebuild his legacy. Thanks to his love, passion, and hard work, he managed to restore both the vineyard and the cellar and make it even more magnificent than it was before the war.
Like the resurgence of his family estate, Antonio achieved the resurgence of some indigenous grapes from this region: Fiano, Greco, and Aglianico. And it managed to position them again as the flagship grapes of Campania.
The large vineyard of Mastroberardino is composed of more than 785 acres. Located in the areas of Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, and Taurasi (all in the province of Irpinia). Irpinia is a paradise, with the Alps mountains in the foreground, the Mediterranean Sea as its neighbor, and a continental climate that allows for a wonderful development of the varieties that are planted.
Piero, Antonio's son, is a passionate winegrower and is the current director of the winery. Piero has brought great knowledge to the winery thanks to his research and plantation projects and his passion for continuing to rebuild the family legacy.
2019 Mastroberardino Redimore Aglianico Irpinia Campania is a delightful wine. Redimore means "King of the Blackberries" and refers to jovial wines. This wine is made with grapes from their vineyard in Taurasi DOCG. And, if there is a place where Aglianico is the queen, it’s here. Thanks to their soils containing a greater presence of organic and volcanic matter, the Aglianico develops wonderfully.
2019 was a great vintage in Campania. Wine Spectator blessed it with 94 points, stating that “The 2019s dazzle with their vivid fruits, crystalline acids and balanced structures. Wines of complexity, elegance and the balance to mature for decades.”
Aging: 12 months in French Oak Barrels.
Tasting Notes:100% Aglianico. Deep ruby red. A complex and enveloping bouquet offers aromas of red fruits, particularly strawberry and raspberry, and spices such as vanilla, tobacco, cocoa, and coffee. This is a warm, enveloping wine with great structure and notable softness. Pair with mushroom and truffle dishes, as well as meat sauces and game.
Crushed stone gives way to sweet exotic spices, then hints of curry, and finally crushed blackberries and plums as the 2019 Irpinia Aglianico Re di More comes to life in the glass. This is silky and polished upon entry, gaining depths through mineral-tinged black fruits, savory herbs and rosy inner florals that form toward the close. Seamless from start to finish, the Re di More tapers off with a concentration of tart raspberries and hints of violet pastille that last incredibly long. This suave expression of pure Aglianico is going to win a lot of hearts. You get a little bit of new barrique spice, and it’s wonderfully integrated. This drinks like a baby Taurasi, but it’s much more accessible. ~92 Points, Vinous Media.
