Hundred Acre is one of those estates, where if you are in the know then you know. The quality of the wines made here is almost impossible to describe without using words like ethereal, sublime, and perfection. These highly coveted bottles regularly flirt with perfection. In fact, the ARK bottling has only ever scored outside of the 90s five times in its history, and those all received 100 points. There is only so much praise one place can receive, Hundred Acre no longer pursues critical ratings.
Jayson Woodbridge is the genius behind Hundred Acre since its inception in 1998. Imagine this: In only his second attempt, his wines earned a coveted spot on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list, and between 2002 and 2015, they notched up over twenty perfect 100-point scores from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
Now, fast forward to the resurrection of his Fortunate Son brand. After years of relentless searching for the perfect vineyard plots, Jayson brings us "The Dreamer," "The Diplomat," and "The Warrior." These wines hail from charming, family-owned vineyards, and they're crafted with the utmost care in Hundred Acre's state-of-the-art underground winery.
The Warrior hails from a small heritage site on Oakville’s western side. It is part of Fortunate Son, an overarching project that showcases the heights viticulture can reach when unhampered by compromise, where superior farming practices directly shape the wine's character.
Jayson and Jim Barbour, acclaimed for their two decades of work at Hundred Acre, honour this vineyard’s generational family farmer by applying their time-honed principles and practices.
Crafted using the signature techniques that Jayson applies at Hundred Acre, The Warrior is a single-vineyard, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. While all three Hundred Acre vineyards are in St. Helena and Calistoga, The Warrior represents Jayson's first Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville. On the Mayacamas side of the valley, distinct from the Vaca range that houses the Hundred Acre sites, this wine fully embodies the terroir and grandeur of the region. It elegantly showcases Jayson's skill in producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon, yielding a dazzling, nuanced wine with incredible depth.
Aging: 24-30 months in French oak barrique.
Tasting Notes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Pure, total power and darkness. Sourced from a single, small, family-owned vineyard and aged for 24-30 months in the finest French oak barrique. The stave wood is hand-selected for ultra-tight grain, then air dried for three years before being made into barrels.
This is the first step into Hundred Acre territory—an entry point before graduating to the higher prices of the main label. It’s pretty profound. The aromas are intense, with gorgeous scorched earth, sagebrush, blood orange, and flamed grapefruit zest. Jayson Woodbridge often talks about walking through the vineyard and inspecting each cluster. He will do 5–7 passes, picking just a fraction of the fruit with each pass—perhaps only 1/10th—ensuring that all the fruit is perfect. Rich, earthy notes of black truffle come through, with the wine being full-bodied, underpinned by a deep vein of fragrant, mineral-scented tannins, salty crushed stones, and a framework of racy acidity that promises longevity. This is an iron fist Cabernet, profoundly structured with exotic layers of fruit, spices, florals, and a wealth of ironstone minerals. Swelling with full-bodied richness, it offers creamy-textured blackberry and cherry fruit, liquorice and hints of un-smoked tobacco.Jayson Woodbridge, the founder of Hundred Acre, purchased the David Fulton Vineyard in St. Helena on Fulton Lane. A winery on-site now serves as the home of Fortunate Son, with 6 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon vines managed by Jim Barbour. In 2023, Woodbridge appointed his son Cameron as cellar master. ~98 Decanter
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon The Warrior is riveting stuff, offering an incredible array of sweet darker currants, tobacco leaf, lead pencil, and classy oak. It's a big, rich wine, yet it's not over the top and has a semi-opaque purple hue, medium to full body, seamless tannins, and a layered, silky, incredibly satisfying style that's going to evolve for two decades. ~98 Jeb Dunnuck
Aromas of dark berries, chocolate, terra-cotta and bark. Full and layered with fine velvety tannins that give a juicy and intense finish. Delicious all around. From the owner of Napa’s Hundred Acre winery. ~97 James Suckling
Across the board, the 2019s at this address are riper and plusher than the 2018s, and Fortunate Son's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon The Warrior is no exception. Black cherries and red cherries join cedar and vanilla shadings on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is expansive and plush, turning velvety on the long finish. ~95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
