For Chateauneuf du Pape, 2019 was an amazing year, Decanter said this vintage “combined elegance with power, and excelled over neighboring appellations.”They also stated that “the results are highly impressive,”and we agree.
Among the greatest CDPs of 2019, we have Bois de Boursans’. A classic, quintessential Chateauneuf du Pape that will enchant you from the very first sip.
This family-owned winery was founded by Jean Versino in 1950. It started as a small project of artisanal-crafted wines, and today, the artisanal side remains, but the size and quality have increased significantly.
Bois de Boursan has 25 acres of vineyards planted with all 13 different grapes allowed in the appellation. The magnificent terroir of different types of soils like stones, clay, sand, sandstone, and limestone contributes to rich and complex wines. The vineyard is managed with sustainable and organic practices.
The winery might be young, but the estate has an impressive history. The Château was built by the order of Pope Jean the 12th and was used as a summer residence for over a century. It suffered the consequences of World War II when it was partly destroyed, but resilience is the best word to describe the family, and they managed to rebuild the entire property and transform it into an award-winning, flagship estate. The Versino family says, “Our wines are the fruits of knowledge passed down through generations. Mixed with a faith in the vines and cultivated with scrupulous care for the environment.”
Aging: 18 months in different types of barrels.
70% Grenache, 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre. Quintessential CDP, is a powerful, structured wine, with amazing aging potential.
The classic 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape is a blend of 70% Grenache, 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, and the rest a mix of varieties, raised two years in foudre. Gorgeous and incredibly Provençal notes of ripe cherries, blackberries, new saddle leather, and peppery garrigue give way to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, seamless Châteauneuf du Pape with a wonderful sense of purity and freshness, both good acidity and building tannins, and a great finish. This is pure, traditional, utterly classic Châteauneuf du Pape done brilliantly. Buy a case and enjoy any time over the coming 15+ years. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck
Flowers, licorice, kirsch, and spice open up the wine. Refined, silky, medium-bodied, and with a freshness that provides lift and length, you find olive tapenade and spice that complicates the red berry-filled finish. The fruit is so ripe, this will be delicious on release. The wine was made using 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, 3% Cinsault, and 2% Counoise. Drink from 2022 - 2033. ~91 The Wine Cellar Insider
