It has been called Napa Valley’s last frontier. Just over the peak of Howell Mountain, alongside Pritchard Hill, is a place less-traveled yet full of promise. The Cervantes Family vineyard is nestled right in the southern point of Pope Valley in the Vacas Mountain Range directly east of Napa's main valley. What this estate lacks in exposure to the masses, it more than makes up for with breathtaking wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon has all the attribution for a classic Napa Valley icon. We only have an extremely small allocation of this wine, do not hesitate on this must-have!
Here, the adventurous Cervantes family pairs with a renowned team, including winemakers Andy Erickson and Jessica Tarpy. For the uninitiated, Andy Erickson has had his hands in just about every major cult wine in the valley since the mid-1990s including Screaming Eagle, Harlan, and Ovid. Andy is nothing short of a Napa legend and Jessica Tarpy has quickly become a major accomplice. Jessica even produces the wine under Andy Erickson and his wife Annie Favia's private label.
This estate has a collaborative environment where winegrowers and designers share a dream to realize the full possibility of an unsung terroir. A 1,100-acre ranch weaves in and around five acres of hillside vineyards. Remote, rugged, unspoiled, picturesque, and free. A land to be stewarded and shared like the wines it gifts. The Cervantes family makes wines of distinctive character from an uncharted place made by people on a mission.
Tasting Notes: 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Franc. The color is black-purple, with a brilliance around the edges that hints at brightness and nuance. The aromas are incredibly expressive, with notes of chocolate, sandalwood, and campfire mingling with fresh fruit notes of black currant and huckleberry. The texture of the wine is broad and expansive, with plenty of tannin to help the wine age, but with a polish and focus that makes the wine immediately enjoyable.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon MMXIII is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon (86%), Malbec (9%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). Deep garnet-purple in color, it leaps from the glass with vibrant notes of crushed blackcurrants, wild blueberries and ripe blackberries, plus hints of menthol, violets and dark chocolate. The medium to full-bodied palate is jam-packed with juicy black fruits and is wonderfully plush, featuring a lively backbone with loads of spiciness coming through on the long finish. ~97 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon sports a dense purple color as well as a ripe, sexy nose of blackcurrants, chocolate-covered blueberries, graphite, and charcoal. It's rich, full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate, with a touch of firmness in its tannins that will require bottle age. I’m not sure this beauty matches the 2016, but time will tell, and it certainly has lots of character and is a beautiful wine. It might just take more time. Forget bottles for 4-5 years and drink over the following 20-25 years. ~94+ Jeb Dunnuck
