The 2018 Calculated Risk Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Napa Valley is a Cabernet Sauvignon for those who live life on the edge, to the crazy ones, and the ones who change the world. The painters who recolor it. The scientists who redefine it. The innovators who take "It can't be done" as their starting point. They make computers in garages, turn moldy bread into medicine, and take the bus seats that were denied to them. They smash barriers because they are convinced that something better exists on the other side. When the pluses outweigh the minuses, they take the calculated risk—one bottle of Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon at a time.

Tasting notes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. A dense and deep purple hue introduces this blockbuster. The nose is so intense with serious blackberry jam accents. It is lush and reveals expensive red fruit, ripe strawberry, and a soft tannin core making the wine so juicy and memorable. The tannic sweetness continues toward the full body finish.

Reviews

This is a great offering from the stellar 2018 vintage that is very food-friendly and approachable when young. Once the cork is popped, the wine opens up with alluring aromas of fresh picked berry, dark fruits, chocolate malt, tobacco, licorice, fresh sage, and a kiss of fine French oak. On the palate, the expressive flavors dark cherry, ripe raspberry, wild strawberry, fresh currants, mineral, and hint of allspice are balanced with bright acidity, smooth tannins, and a creamy, milk chocolate note that leads to a long elegant finish. Medium to full-bodied at first, this wine gets bigger as it opens in the glass. More importantly, it tastes delicious right out of the gate. Meaning, you don't have to decant it or patiently wait for it to develop in the cellar. Instead, it's a fine Cabernet Sauvignon that is charming, amiable, and ready to please. ~94 Chris Sawyer

Fresh violets, blackberries, pine, and bark on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with fine, sleek tannins. Fresh and floral with gravel notes, too. Better from 2021, but already very attractive. ~92 James Suckling
