About the Wine

The story takes us back to 1983, featuring Silvia Imparato and Riccardo Cotarella, who together crafted the first bottles of Montevetrano in 1989. This remarkable blend, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (90%) with a touch of Aglianico (10%), swiftly captured the hearts of wine enthusiasts, establishing its legacy as a symbol of excellence.

Nestled within the picturesque Monti Picentini Regional Park in southern Italy, Montevetrano is a 26-hectare estate, with 5 hectares dedicated to vineyards. The vineyards thrive in San Cipriano Picentino, a former Bourbons’ estate perched 100 meters above sea level. The landscape is a mosaic of oaks, chestnuts, hazelnut trees, citrus groves, and olive trees, all under the watchful presence of an ancient medieval castle. Blackberries and old roses mark the boundaries, leading to the “Horse vineyard” adjacent to a charming 18th-century country house.

Montevetrano’s unique blend takes its name from the medieval castle on the estate, dating back to Roman times. This wine beautifully marries French varietals with the Campanian king of red grapes - Aglianico, creating a symphony of flavors that has delighted wine lovers worldwide. Its complexity reflects the rich, diverse terroir, offering a persistent character influenced by the sea and a mild climate. The Picentini Mountains, forming a protective crown around the vineyard, further enhance its quality.

What started as a project among friends has matured into a refined legacy. Silvia Imparato, the visionary owner, leads this endeavor with Riccardo Cotarella, a now-renowned enologist. Domenico “Mimì” La Rocca, born in Montevetrano, oversees the vineyard and cellar, while Patrizia Marziale, Silvia’s invaluable assistant, ensures everything runs smoothly. Gaia, Silvia’s daughter and a talented graphic designer in Milan, contributes her artistic touch, and Monica Martino, the ever-reliable secretary, has become an integral part of the team. Guido Groppi, the commercial director, brings Montevetrano to the world.

Aging: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Aglianico, 20% Merlot

Tasting Notes:Deep ruby-red in color, aromas of blackberries and spices complement undertones of black currants, licorice, tobacco, earth, and leather. On the palate, Montevetrano is full-bodied, yet elegant with fine-grained tannins and a rich, silky texture.

Reviews

Aromas and flavors of blackberries and blueberries with licorice and black pepper. Medium to full body. Chewy, yet refined and balance. Another two or three years of bottle age would bring it more together. ~96 James Suckling

Fully saturated ruby-purple. Gunpowder green tea, flint, cocoa, coffee, blueberry, and blackberry jam on the knockout nose. Smooth, elegant, rich, and round, this big, dense wine has a massive but refined presence, thanks to its uncanny, lovely sugar/acid/tannin balance. Finishes long with lingering concentration and density, not to mention a multilayered appeal that is hard to deny. Very well done. ~95 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media.
