The Capanna family has been displaying mastery in Brunello di Montalcino for over six decades. Founded in 1957 by Giuseppe Cencioni, Capanna is located in the prestigious Montosoli area north of Montalcino. Giuseppe and his sons, Benito and Franco, were among the pioneers of modern Brunello, starting to bottle their own wines in the 1960s. In 1967, after Brunello received its DOC status, Giuseppe became one of the 25 founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino.

The estate has expanded to 25 hectares of vineyards, all within 2 km of their cellar, benefiting from exceptional terroir. The Cencioni family has upheld traditional winemaking, passed down through generations, ensuring each vintage reflects Montalcino’s unique characteristics.

Today, Patrizio and Amedeo Cencioni, representing the third and fourth generations, personally oversee winemaking and vineyard management. Their dedication to quality and tradition continues to elevate Capanna’s reputation as one of Brunello di Montalcino’s top producers.

The 2017 vintage is a testament to the resilience and craftsmanship of the estate. Marked by a hot and dry growing season, this vintage showcases intense concentration, refined structure, and exceptional depth. Despite the challenges of the vintage, Capanna’s meticulous vineyard management ensured freshness and balance, capturing the essence of Sangiovese Grosso in a way that few producers can. The result is a Brunello of power and elegance, with an expressive bouquet, layered complexity, and a finish that lingers like a Tuscan sunset.

Aging: 40 months in 10 to 25-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks, followed by bottle refinement.

100% Sangiovese. Ruby red trending towards garnet. The wine is intense with a broad bouquet, elegant, rich with red fruits, spiced licorice, and tobacco. The wine is comforting, soft with velvet tannins, balanced and intense, crescendoed with an elegant finish. Pair alongside red meats, game, mature cheeses.

Awash with alluring red fruit and an underlying frisson of black olive savouries. Ample and weighty with dusty tannins and an attractive evolution rendering a supple succulence of acidity and softly meshed texture. Long and enduring.~97 Decanter

Structured with pleasing 'red' energyshowing notes of currants, raspberries, passionflower and plums. Medium bodied, light tannins and a savoury finale of medium volume. It grows from the centre palate onwards showing precision. Better from 2025. ~94 Raffaele Vecchione - WinesCritic.com

Lots of ripe berries and sandalwood with nutmeg. It’s full-bodied with chewy tannins and a big, juicy finish. Needs time to soften. Chunky. Try after 2025.~93 James Suckling

The nose is a basket full of freshly picked dark berries, but with sanguine undertones of iron and mint, like the foreboding forest at the edge of the meadow. The palate begins with bright, red berries joining the fun, before the earthy savoriness is resurrected by chewy, chalky tannins. ~93 Wine Enthusiast

Bright, rich ruby garnet colour. Shows a bit restrained at first, then opens up with notes of prunes and cherry compote, as well as some liquorice and pepper. On the palate, plenty of grippy, slightly drying tanninsat the core, combined with ripe notes of plum, quite rough on the finish. ~93 Falstaff
