About the Wine

“Barolo is more than one of the world's great wines and a partner to one of Italy's most varied and refined cuisines. It's an evocative landscape of gently rolling hills covered by a quilt of vineyards and topped by medieval villages with winding cobblestone streets and views to the Alps.” ~ Wine Spectator.

Schiavenza is located in the magical region of Serralunga d'Alba, in the Barolo DOCG. This winery, which began with the brothers Vittorio and Ugo, is currently managed by Luciano Pira. Luciano and Nebbiolo are like synonyms, this brilliant agronomist has been producing some of the most exceptional Nebbiolo’s from this region.

Schiavenza is made up of more than 24 acres of vineyards in Serralunga d'Alva, plus some acres in Monforte d'Alba, both vineyards are home to excellent quality, top-tier, artisanal red wines. Everything about Schiavenza winery is impressive, the winery radiates the culture of the Piedmont area.

2016 Schiavenza Serralunga Barolo is an exceptional Nebbiolo. It is balanced, fruity but smooth, deep, and long. If you truly want to experience the magic of a beautiful Barolo, this wine is for you!

This wine comes from one of the best vintages in Piedmont from the last recent years, Wine Spectator gave it a 98 point review and stated that it: “Resulted in a long growing season and ideal harvest conditions. Balanced, vibrant, and tense Barolos”.

Tasting Notes: 100% Nebbiolo. This wine has a great structure, it is austere but deeply exciting. Aromas of cherries, currants, combined with tobacco and earthy notes. It finishes off with a long and fine length. Pair this wine with game, grilled dishes, or mature cheeses.

Reviews

"Drawing upon fruit from one of the most interesting and consistent subzones in the appellation, the Schiavenza 2016 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba puts a lot of intensity and beauty right up there for you to admire. The bouquet shows a glossy, polished quality with shiny cherry and plum. That smoothness applies to the palate, most specifically to the tannins that leave some astringency at this young stage but are otherwise integrated. The wine's complexity is enhanced by spice, rusted iron, blood orange, balsam herb, and hints of truffle essence. Some 11,800 bottles were made. Schiavenza offers us terrific value in this classic vintage." ~94 Points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

Vibrant and velvety, this Barolo features cherry, currant, rose and a hint of tar flavors, with elements of iron, earth and tobacco around the edges. It's firm, yet feels more approachable than many 2016s at this stage. Fine length, with a chalky feel. Best from 2022 through 2042.” ~93 Points, Wine Spectator.

"Very attractive, ripe aromas of strawberries and cherries follow through to a full body with a big, rich mouthful of ripe fruit and chewy tannins. Needs a year or two to soften more, but already very open" ~92 Points, James Suckling
