About The Wine

Cru Bourgeois is the classification that separates serious Haut-Medoc from the rest — estates that farm gravelly hillsides within striking distance of Margaux and Saint-Julien, hand-harvest, sort twice in the cellar, and age in oak. Chateau du Moulin Rouge sits six kilometers from Margaux appellation on twenty hectares of gravelly hillocks, averaging forty-year-old vines. The blend is classic Left Bank: fifty percent Merlot for flesh, forty percent Cabernet Sauvignon for structure, ten percent Cabernet Franc for lift.

The 2015 vintage delivered what serious Bordeaux drinkers wait for: radiant purple-red color, aromas of blackberry, raspberry, sour cherry, and toasted wood from twelve months in oak. The wine is smooth and rounded — elegant lightness with the kind of balance that lets Bordeaux age gracefully.

We taste five thousand wines a year and buy four percent. This one earned its place because it punches above its weight class — the kind of find that makes skipping grocery-store wine feel like the easiest decision you made all week.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Graphite, dark-plum, and blackberry aromas with leafy nuances. The palate has a strong core of firm linear tannins, while the fruits are in the blue-plum and blackberry spectrum. Long regal finish. ~93 James Suckling

Set in the heart of Haut-Médoc and close to the 18th-century fortress designed to stop the British attacking through the Gironde estuary (they never tried), this estate has made a firm, tannic wine that has great black fruits and a rich potential. Drink from 2022. ~90 Wine Enthusiast

THE PRODUCER

Chateau du Moulin Rouge

Château du Moulin Rouge is a family estate in Cussac-Fort-Médoc, sandwiched between the famous Margaux and Saint Julien appellations, and it's belonged to the same family for 13 generations, with roots going back to the 18th century. Its name comes from a windmill built in 1732 (so no, not that Moulin Rouge). The vines stretch over 27 hectares of gravelly rises with plenty of sunshine and a microclimate influenced by the nearby Gironde estuary, and the blend leans a bit Merlot-heavy for the Left Bank: 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, from vines averaging about 45 years old, farmed sustainably. Grapes are hand-harvested, vinified traditionally with extended maceration, and aged twelve months in French oak. Now ranked Cru Bourgeois Supérieur, it's the kind of classic, honest Médoc that punches above its price. Decanter described the 2019 as classically styled, with a more traditional, meaty, earthy character than some of the fruitier Cru Bourgeois.
