Praised as coming from “the finest terroir one could hope for” this outstanding Château Confidence hails from a 6-acre vineyard located in the mythical triangle of vines surrounded by Rauzan-Segla, Cantenac Brown, and Chateau Palmer. It is rumored that these beautiful parcels will not stand on their own for long and many believe they will be purchased by a neighboring vineyard. So good are its vines, that it will simply be absorbed into the Grand Crus, just as Chateau Palmer did with its purchase of Chateau Boston.
As it stands now, this beautiful Chateau is helmed by the brilliance of Dominique Befve, previous director of the iconic Château Lafite. He labored 10 years to reshape the vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild, L’Evangile, and Rieussec. Seeking a new challenge, he then managed the direction of the second growth Chateau Lascombes in Margaux. His employers here were so grateful for his dedicated labor, that they now lend their winery and vinification equipment to his own winemaking endeavors. This means that the same processes and investment of the second growth Chateau Lascombes are being utilized for Befve's own wines.
Dominique has created a precise and elegant wine. The 2015 Château de Confidence Margaux was called “the epitome of the expression of elegance in Margaux. It is not overripe, over dense, or over-oaked.”
This is truly an outstanding Margaux, at a price you won't find anywhere else.
Aging: 20 months, 40% in French new oak barrels.
Tasting Notes: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot. A wine of character, with a generous nose full of fine oak, dried fruit, and brandy. The mid-palate is firm, with interesting minerality and a long, warm finish.
Fresh, frank, and positively tannic, this is also charming thanks to its generous morello-cherry fruit. Long, clean finish with some minerality adding real interest. Drink or hold. ~91 James Suckling.
The nose is fruity and offers a slight gourmandize, generosity, and a slight minerality. It reveals notes of crushed blackberry, salty minerality, crushed cassis, and crushed raspberry combined with hints of chocolate and a subtle hint of violet and a subtle toasted hint. The palate is fruity, and well-balanced and offers a nice acid frame, minerality, a good expression, a nice grain as well as a nice matter. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of blackberry, crushed cassis, and slight notes of raspberry associated with hints of redcurrant touches of chocolate, vanilla/oak, and subtle touches of sweet spices. Tannins are very slightly dry and a bit tight. Good length. ~91 VertdeVin
Deeply colored with bricking. Open, the generous nose showing fruits in brandy, dried fruits, and fine oakiness. Warm, expressive attack echoing the nose beautifully. The mid-palate and finish are firmer and bolder in this characterful wine. ~90 Gilbert & Gaillard.
