There is only so much you can expect from a wine, a rockstar founding team, a mindfully made product, and maybe on top of all that some good critical reviews. AXR has all of these, the estate is cut from the same cloth as Alpha Omega, just placed three miles up Highway 29. Winemaker Jean Hoefliger is constantly challenging himself to produce a better product, and critics notice. This is a wine full of depth from the start, ready to drink today, and able to age for the next decade.
AXR takes its name from the AxR rootstock (Aramond x Rupestris) that was so prominent in building the modern California wine industry, AxR#1 eventually succumbed to Phylloxera and most of California wine country was left as a blank canvas. Vintners now had a chance to replant and to rethink the entire structure of the vineyards; attention was paid to the terroir and unique varietals were researched. This was truly a turning point in the wine industry as we know it.
The AXR dream began with four friends sitting around a table sharing, dreaming, laughing, and occasionally sipping! The room was filled with an intense passion for wine and a good intention to be true to themselves and the history of Napa Valley: this is where AXR was born. By utilizing modern and innovative techniques in the cellar, AXR is able to extract the unique soul of Napa Valley's soils into wines enjoyable now, or many years to come.
Tasting Notes: Red Wine. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep, shiny ruby with touches of magenta. The nose showcases touches of flowers such as lilac, violet, and fruit such as blueberry reduction, cotton candy, rose candy, cassis jelly, apricot jam, and watermelon gum. The palate has a fruity entrance, evolving on an aromatic mid-palate lingering on fresh fruit and granular tannins with touches of boysenberries.
A dense and seamless red with lots of blackberry and blueberry character. Full body and firm, seamless tannins. Bright and vivid fruit. This is one to sit back and sip through the night. Drink or hold. ~95 James Suckling
Cut from the same cloth, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is also beautiful, with similar black and blue fruits, dried violets, graphite, and Christmas spice aromas and flavors. Rich, full-bodied, opulent and sexy, with sweet tannin, it too shows its vintage nicely in its slightly more ripe, exuberant, exotic style. Drink it over the coming 15-20 years. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck
This is gorgeous with extra fine and chewy tannins, complementinga complex and vivid aroma and palate. Medium to full body. Juicy and savory finish. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling
A blend from multiple sites aged 22 months in 80% new French oak, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is a smoking good base Cabernet and offers loads of crème de cassis and blackberry fruits, a rich, full-bodied, balanced mouthfeel, some earthy, leafy, herbal notes, and enough structure and depth to drink well for over a decade. It’s a pleasure-bent beauty. 92 ~Jeb Dunnuck
