About the Wine

Here's the skinny: Philippe Melka is one of the most talented and sought after consultants in Napa. Most of the wines he blesses sell for $150-500+. If you want to taste his handiwork, grab this wine that we scored a deal on.

This richly expressive wine draws its prized fruit from Beckstoffer’s heralded To Kalon Vineyard, St. Helena, and Caldwell Vineyard’s legendary Block-15 – whose vines have flourished in the rocky, volcanic soils of the heralded Coombsville District for over 30 years. The clone of Cabernet grown on this vineyard is prized for its complexity and depth, and the company of wines sourced from this vineyard is noteworthy.

Aging: 28 months, 93% New French Oak

Winemaker Tasting Notes:  "the 2014 Cor Leonis Cabernet is the epitome of our winemaking philosophy. With its ruby red hues beckoning; aromas of black cherry, and softly tanned leather alluringly announce the wine’s arrival. Upon entry, one’s palate is greeted by a teasing mélange of dense black fruit, plum and wild raspberry, accompanied by hints of cedar and baking spices. "

Reviews

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Cor Leonis comes from Pritchard Hill’s Chang Vineyard, the famous To Kalon Vineyard of Andy Beckstoffer, and the Caldwell Vineyard in Coombsville. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and exhibits the tobacco leaf, blue and black fruits, camphor, licorice, subtle toast and smoke as loamy soil undertones that a great Cabernet from Napa often does. The wine is pure and full-bodied, with beautifully integrated oak, acidity and tannin. Drink it over the next 15-20 years.

Owners Larry and Mary Ann Tsai are long-time veterans of the Napa Valley wine scene and produce a bevy of noteworthy wines from vineyards as far-flung as the Sonoma Coast site of Charles Heintz to Cabernet Sauvignons from Howell Mountain, Oakville, Coombsville, and even Pritchard Hill.  ~93+WA

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Cor Leonis is just as gorgeous today as it was last year. Mid-weight and polished throughout, the 2014 will offer considerable near and medium term appeal after it is released. Raspberry jam, rose petal, mint and cinnamon give the 2014 its signature bright aromatic profile in this vintage. This impeccably balanced Cabernet Sauvignon its pure pleasure. ~92-95 VM
