The world of wine loves Dragonette Cellars and some of the most recognized wine critics just can't stop praising this winery. To give you an idea of how highly esteemed Dragonette is, here are some quotes from just a couple of them:
“Dragonette is one of the most fascinating wineries on the Central Coast. The best wines are truly world-class, and I don’t use those words lightly.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous.
“These are beautiful, distinctive, and incredibly high-quality wines across the board, and at the top end are some of the most impressive wines I was able to taste from Santa Barbara County.” ~ Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
Dragonette Cellars was founded in 2005 by brothers John and Steve Dragonette and Brandon Sparks-Gillis. Their dream started when they were working in a famous wine store in Los Angeles.
From the beginning, John, Steve, and Brandon were very clear about what they wanted to achieve: The best wines with the best fruit from Santa Barbara; this led them to years of arduous research and search for vineyards that would achieve the optimum quality they were looking for. Currently, the grapes to make their recognized labels come from different vineyards, each one specialized in different grape varieties, which are found in some of the most outstanding AVAs in Santa Barbara Country such as Happy Canyon, Sta. Rita Hills, Santa Ynez and Ballard Canyon.
20 months in neutral French oak.
88% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 1% Viognier. Aromas of fresh boysenberry, blackberry blueberry, cardamom and herbs. Medium to full bodied, ripe tannin, great a beautiful acidity and a long finish long. Pair this wine with BBQ Ribs or a nice grilled burger.
“This bottling, from seven cool climate vineyards, makes a great intro into savory Syrah, showing all that peppery might without shoving it down the throat. Cracked peppercorn is redolent on the nose and palate, with the latter also showing raw lamb and beef char. The sip tends toward soy and leather, but with a core of dried blackberry fruit that's familiar to most palates. The texture is tightly woven.” ~ 93 Points, Wine Enthusiast.
“The 2014 Seven, Dragonette's Syrah-based blend, is gorgeous. Deep, dark and intense through and through, it is nevertheless tightly wound and in need of time in bottle to allow the searing tannins to soften. Inky dark blue/purplish Syrah fruit effortlessly fills out the wine's ample frame. Dollops of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Viognier round out the blend.” ~93 Points, Vinous.
“The 2014 Seven is a Syrah dominated cuvée that includes 11% Grenache and just a splash of Viognier. Fermented with a small amount of whole cluster and aged 20 months in neutral oak, it’s deeper ruby, mostly opaque purple color is followed by a terrific bouquet of plums, blackberries, freshly cracked pepper and subtle hints of olives. Deep, rich and medium to full-bodied, with good acidity, drink it over the coming 7-8 years.” ~ 93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck.
“Elegantly complex and well-defined, with raspberry and pomegranate aromas and smoky accents that lead to lively flavors of orange zest, fruitcake spice and loamy white pepper. Drink now through 2026.” ~91 Points, Wine Spectator.
