About the Wine

The Black Stallion 2013 Napa Valley Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon is made from a blend of vineyards from across Napa Valley. The 2013 vintage Cabernet is primarily composed of grapes from vineyards located in the high elevation mountains that surround Napa Valley. These mountain-top vineyards are known for creating wines with intense power and concentration. A smaller portion of this wine comes from the valley floor regions of Napa Valley, which helps to balance and soften the texture of the complete blend.

At Black Stallion, the search for greatness means boots in the vineyard, checking on vine growth and grape development all year long. It means tasting grapes rather than looking at lab reports to determine the perfect moment to pick. It means harvesting and sorting fruit by hand. Black Stallion Winery’s small scale means that each lot of grapes that arrives at harvest is treated individually, and receives a unique upbringing to bring out its full potential for excellence.

There’s no set recipe for a Black Stallion blend, just the finely honed palates of winemaker Ralf Holdenried and his team. It’s not uncommon for Holdenried to try dozens of trial blends before deciding on a final cuvée. The goal is always the same: To create a seamless, harmonious wine that captures the varietal’s best expression of that vintage in Napa Valley.

Aging: 20 Months in 33% New French Oak.

Tasting Notes: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon 9% Merlot <1% Petite Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. This elegant wine begins with aromas of Black cherry, cocoa, and allspice. Flavors of blackberry, coffee, and cinnamon are followed by a balanced tannin and concentrated fruit finish.

Reviews

Juicy black fruit stars in this lush, expansive red, nicely priced for the appellation and providing great value for the quality. Violets appear on the nose, softening the length of tannin and toasted oak that follow. ~91 Wine Enthusiast
