About the Wine
Ferrari has been producing sparkling wine in Trento for over 100 years. Giulio Ferrari's original dream for this company was for the wine to compete with the greats of Champagne. Giulio was the first person to bring substantial plantings of Chardonnay into Italy, which he deemed necessary to produce world-class wines. The Riserva Lunelli takes its name from the Family that inherited the estate from Giulio and runs the operation today. This 100% Chardonnay sparkler is a chiseled, energetic wine that would impress even the most staunch Champagne drinkers.
A beguiling synthesis of tradition and innovation, it is the only wine from Ferrari whose first fermentation takes place in large Austrian oak casks, as in the days of Bruno Lunelli. This origin in wood gives it a greater body, an intriguing richness on the palate, and a harmonious roundness of flavor. After at least 7 years’ maturation in the bottle, the Ferrari Riserva Lunelli displays a complex bouquet and a broad structure, making it extraordinarily versatile when matched with food and ideal for drinking throughout a meal.
This is a wine that is served at the finest Italian, Michelin rated restaurants. Given the extended aging, the wine is actually a bargain. Don't miss a chance to taste this rare and special wine from NE Italy.
Tasting Notes:A brilliant golden yellow color, shot through with minuscule bubbles. The nose is intense and varied: its immediate, intense sensations are reminiscent of ripe yellow fruits, papaya, gingerbread, ground coffee, and almond brittle. The notable finish offers toasty and fruity tones that prolong the aftertaste in a truly remarkable fashion.
Reviews
A pure expression of Chardonnay, the Ferrari 2009 Trento Metodo Classico Riserva Lunelli Extra Brut is a creamy and texturally rich expression with generous layers of orchard fruit, apricot, honey, toasted almond and baked pear. In appearance, the wine displays a bright golden color with the slightest amber hue. The age of this elegant sparkler contributes to the generosity and important complexity of this beautiful and elegant wine. ~94 Wine Advocate
The 2009 Riserva Lunelli is incredibly rich and deep. This 100% cru Chardonnay goes through its first fermentation in Austrian oak casks before bottling, where it spends no less than seven years on the lees. It’s elegant with an alluring bouquet of roasted almond, ripe apple, yellow tropical citrus, sweet dusty florals and spice, taking on a hint of butterscotch over time. The textures are soft, rich and enveloping, while also showing tremendous energy through a stimulating mix of acids and minerals, with hints of brioche and inner herbal tones, as the wine becomes more savory with a gentle, mouthwatering finish. Of note, the Riserva Lunelli receives only one gram of dosage, yet the balance here is remarkable. Lose a few bottles in the cellar, and reap the rewards. Disgorged: 2019, L9077/9. ~93 Vinous Media
Aromas of lemon pie and cooked apples follow through to a full body with a round and caressing texture of fine bubbles. Flavorful finish. Drink or hold. ~92 James Suckling
